Chess 101 W INNING WITH T WO P IECES Tactics The rook and queen are called major pieces for one of them with their king have the ability to win the game with a checkmate. This tactic is a must to know for it is often the key to victory. In the top position, white has checkmate. In the bottom position, black has checkmate. You want to create a ‘net’ over the enemy king and then tighten the net to this position or on any edge of the board. Once the net limits the enemy king to an edge, force it to move opposite your king (away from your rook) and move the rook to the rank his king is in for checkmate. For example: 1. …Ra2, 2. If Kd2 then Ra1++ or: 1. …Ra2 2. Kf1 Ke3 3. Kg1 Kf1 4. Kh1 Kg1 5. Kg1 Ra1++ Module 9
