3. Why I picked this project I picked this project because I really like chess and I think you guys will enjoy it too.

4. Things to know… – Chess has been around for over 1400 years. – People believe that the game of chess originated in India and then moved to China. – In India chess helped teach military strategies to Indian princes. This is why chess is sometimes called the Royal Game.

5. Basic Rules… – Chess is a game for 2 people. – Players control their own army. – On a regular chess board there is usually a dark side and a light side. The light side always goes first. – The GOAL of this game is to capture the King. When you capture the King and he has no where else to move it is called CHECKMATE. But when he has a place to move it is called CHECK.

6. Chess Board When you set up a chess board the lighter corner is always on the lower right hand corner.

7. The King The king is the most valuable chess piece. He can’t jump other pieces. The King is priceless. The king can move in any direction but only one space at a time. Once the king is captured the game is over.

8. The Queen The Queen is the most powerful piece. She is the most powerful because she can move in any direction. She can also move as far as she wishes UNTIL she runs in to another piece. The Queen can’t jump over pieces. She is worth 9 points.

9. The Rooks The Rooks can move forward, backwards, left, and right. They can travel as long as they want until they run into another piece. Rooks can’t jump over other pieces. The Rooks are worth 5 points.

10. The Bishops The Bishops can move only diagonally. The only other piece who can move diagonally is the Queen and the Pawn when they attack. They can also go backwards. Bishops can’t jump over other pieces. Like the Queen, the Bishops can move as many spaces as they want until they run into someone. The Bishop is worth 3 points.

11. The Knights The Knights move in an L direction and attack in that same direction. An L on a chess board is one space to the side and two spaces up or the opposite. Knights are the only chess piece that can jump over other pieces. The Knight is worth 3 points.

12. The Pawns Pawns can only move forward, but on its first move it can move two spaces forward if it wants to. The only way a pawn can attack is diagonally. The Pawn can’t jump over other pieces. The Pawn is worth 1 point.

13. Strategies #1 Protect your king Castling is when your Rook and your King switch spots where the Bishop and the Knight used to be. This is a complicated strategy. If you need help let me know. Get your King to the corner of the board when possible where he is usually safer. Don’t put off castling. You should usually castle as quickly as possible. Remember, it doesn’t matter how close you are to checkmating your opponent if your own King is checkmated first!

14. Strategies #2 Don’t give pieces away Don’t lose your pieces! Each piece is valuable and you can’t win a game without pieces.

15. Strategies #3 Control the center You should always try and control the center of the board with your pieces and pawns.
