Sand Sampler User’s Manual

Introduction Things to Know Before Starting your Sampler Starting and Operating Troubleshooting Maintenance

1 Introduction This user’s manual has been prepared by the members of the Group 4, FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, 2009 ME Senior Design course. There is no supplementary warranty information as this is the ONLY Sand Sampler in existence. Follow the instructions and recommendations in this manual carefully as to avoid misuse. NOTE: After reading this manual, place in your car’s glove compartment for easy referencing. IntroductionWARNINGS AND CAUTIONS This manual contains WARNINGS and CAUTIONS against uses that may cause harm or bodily injury. You should read the entire manual so that you do not miss any important information. The mechanism moves in two horizontal directions and one vertical direction all controlled with the switches on the control box. Movement

1 Introduction For Your Safety To prevent damage to your Sampler, be sure to take extra care when transporting. Place Sampler flat in transporter and secure tightly with straps or tie downs. CAUTION: Avoid at all costs turning or flipping your Sampler on its side. The electronics and overall leveling may be compromised and need adjusting if you do so. DO NOT stand near the chain while Sampler is in use. Keep all fingers away from moving parts as they can cause bodily harm. Observe Caution near the Chain WARNING: Observe Caution near the Motors and Mounts Stand clear of the motors and motor mounts while in use. Any alteration should be done when Sampler is in STAND BY mode. Operate machinery in a well ventilated area to avoid dangerous accumulation of sand in the air. WARNING:

2 Things to Know Before Starting your Sampler Parts Mechanism: Control Box: Power Supply: Familiarize with the Control Box before operating on a real experiment. Please follow the labels on your control box as they specify the direction of movement. Vacuum System: 12V, 10A CAUTION:

3 Starting and Operating Step 1: Place the mechanism on top of the target so that the frame falls in place. Step 2: Plug Control Box into the Power Supply. StartingStep 3: Plug in the vacuum hose marked “IN” to the top of the straight vacuum hose extension on the mechanism. Step 4: Plug in the vacuum pump and Power Supply to a power outlet.

Starting and Operating Step 1: Locate desired point for vacuum tip head. Step 2: Lower vacuum tip head until it touches the sand. Step 3: Push the start button to turn on the vacuum pump. Step 4: Lower vacuum tip to desired depth. WARNING: Removing more than 1.25in can result in too much torque on any of the motors. If this happens raise the vacuum tip head. Operating Step 5: Remove a 4in line of sand using the horizontal lead screw switch. Step 6: Take back to starting position and use the sprocket switch to move the mechanism to the following 4in line. Step 7: Repeat Steps 1-6 to remove layers until desired sampling depth. 3

Troubleshooting Emergencies WARNING: If at any point during usage you feel unsafe, TURN OFF the power to the Sampler IMMEDIATELY! Tensioning the Chain 1.Loosen the nut. 2.Screw in to tighten and unscrew to release chain tension. 3.Re-tighten nut to hold in place. 4

6 Maintenance To ensure the lifetime of your Sampler we recommend the following: Clean sand off mechanism after use. store in a low humidity environment. It is recommended to rub the rods dry graphite or WD-40 5 WARNING: Do not oil any component of the mechanism that is accessible by sand.
