Heading and Title  Last name and page number in your running head  Aligned on the right side  Last Name  Teacher Name  Class Name and Hour  Date: 16 September 2011  All aligned on the left hand side of the paper

Quotations  To indicate short quotations (fewer than four typed lines) in your text, enclose the quotation within double quotation marks  Provide the author and specific page citation in the text, and include a complete reference on the Works Cited page

Quotations  Punctuation marks such as periods, commas, and semicolons should appear after the parenthetical citation  Question marks and exclamation points should appear within the quotation marks if they are a part of the quoted passage but after the parenthetical citation if they are a part of your text

Adding and subtracting words from quotations  If you add a word or words in a quotation, you should put brackets around the words to indicate that they are not part of the original text  If you omit a word or words from a quotation, you should indicate the deleted word or words by using ellipsis marks, which are three periods

Examples  The chief becomes fearful when he realizes that “there is no real hope against her or the combine" (Kesey 101).  He claimed he could provide “hundred of examples [of court decisions] to illustrate the tension between church and state” (Bradford 11).  The turning point of the novel occurs when “that big red hand of McMurphy’s is reaching into the fog... Dragging them blinking into the open" (Kesey124).

How to quote a quote  If you are going to quote dialogue in the book, you must use an additional quotation mark to indicate that you are quoting a preexisting quote  ‘“Back to sleep now, Mistuh Bromden’ Mr. Turkle mutters” (Kesey 84).  “‘Chief, you’re our last bet”’ (Kesey 126).
