SATURDAY 27 th SEPTEMBER 11.00a.m. – 2.00p.m. County Hall, Durham 1

Programme Notes The slides in this presentation should give you a flavour of what we covered in our September conference. Some slides may not be self explanatory as they formed part of an active session on the day. You should also be able to read the conference feedback in the next document.

Aims To have a say in the services provided by us for you Give us your comments, suggestions, ideas for future activities Tell us what you think of the activities and events we’ve offered so far Have a chat and share ideas with likeminded people

What’s our structure? 4 Board of Trustees Syd Garbutt, Chairman Pam Norman, Treasurer Vacancy, Secretary Robert Hill Colleen Kirton Jan Barron Peter Tonkin Part time Project Workers Lesley ClellandAndrea Otty Volunteers Registered VolunteersAd Hoc

Accountability Members and Service Users Trustees Durham County Council Other funding bodies Charity Commission 5

What does it mean to be a Trustee? 6 Well you can’t be a RHINO! Really Here in Name Only Trustees: meet monthly are legally responsible for dadlg volunteer to support activities

One organisation – Two halves! 7

So what’s the difference? County-wide A universal service open to families with children and young people with a disability Subsidised events and activities (short breaks) through contract with Durham County Council Must live within County Durham DADLG Broker best price for events and activities taking advantage of group and disability rates Funded through bids to funding providers and member subscriptions can live in County Durham OR surrounding areas 8

What’s the same? We provide sport, leisure and social opportunities for children and young people with disabilities and their families We try as hard as we can to provide events and activities that you want, at a price you can afford We ask you for ideas and suggestions and wherever we can we provide it We try to provide a wide range of activities for children and young people up to the age of 25 (and older for dadlg events) 9

So what exactly do we do? 10

Managing allocation of places Countywide? If fewer people than places (or exact number) request it’s simple – everyone goes If more people request than places available: Not first come first served Will increase places available if possible BUT Deadlines Booking requests Reserve list No shows! Repeat activities – Bowling!!!!! 11

How can you help? If you book and just don’t turn up We lose money Places are wasted because we can’t offer them to families on the reserve list 12

Why pay £20 per year for dadlg? Fred has paid Membership FeeMary has not attends Taekwondo 38 weeks - £114attends Taekwondo 38 weeks - £152 Fred, 2 siblings, Mum and Dad go to theatre - £60 Mary, 2 siblings, Mum and Dad go to theatre - £70 Attends Quad biking twice - £22Attends quad biking twice - £26 Family goes to Newcastle Eagles Match - £20 Family goes to Newcastle Eagles match - £25 £20 per year Total - £236Total - £273 13

What’s it been like so far? Which activities and events have you attended? What did you think? Could we improve them? What would you like to see repeated? (either because you wanted to go first time around but didn’t get places or liked it and would like to do it again) What would you like us to provide that we haven’t done before or for a long time? 14

NEWSLETTER 15

How can you help? So what do you get out of it? Develop new skills and perspectives Your chance to make a real difference Influence your career choice Enhance employability Open up a range of opportunities Improved social life A sense of achievement Fun and enjoyment! 16

‘ No person has ever been honoured for what he received. Honour has been the reward for what he gave’. Calvin Coolidge ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has’. Margaret Mead 17

We want to hit your target? What do like / dislike? As a family, are there activities you find difficult to access? What are your child’s interests? Would you like to volunteer for dadlg? 18
