Title: Seed Germination and Growth  Purpose: To determine if fish nutrient water affects the germination and growth of a _________ seed  Research Question: Does watering a _______ seed with fish nutrient water affect its germination and growth?  Background Information:  Germination – When a plant emerges from a seed  Factors that affect germination and growth of a plant  Air  Light  Moisture  Temperature  Substrate or Medium  Type of seed

Hypothesis If… (cause) Then… (effect) Because… (rationale)  If…_______________________________________________  Then… ____________________________________________  Because… _________________________________________ Seed Germination and Growth

Materials  Water (5 ml)  Fish Nutrient Water (5ml)  Pipet  Petri Dishes  8 Paper Towel Squares (8 cm x 8 cm)  4 Seeds of ______  Forceps  Magnifying Lens  Labels  Ruler  Scissors  Beaker  Erlenmeyer Flask

Welcome Assignment - Aug. 21 &22  Take out your Seed Germination Lab Sheet  Read over the procedures again

Procedure 1. Label one petri dish top and bottom set with:  Period, Group #, Control 2. Label one petri dish top and bottom set with:  Period, Group #, Fish H2O 3. Cut the paper towel into eight, 8cm x 8cm size pieces 4. Label the paper towel to identify the location of seed #1 & #2 & another set of paper towels with seed #3 & #4 5. Place two paper towel squares in each petri dish with 2 seeds in each (use forceps to carefully place seeds) 6. Pour 10 ml of tap water into a beaker

Procedure continued… 7. Measure 5ml of tap water (Control) with the pipet, and pour it into the Control petri dish 8. Empty tap water in the sink and Pour 10 ml of fish nutrient water into the beaker 9. Measure 5ml of fish nutrient water with the pipet, and pour it into the fish nutrient petri dish 10. Cover the seeds with two more paper towel squares 11. Rinse the pipet and beaker 12. Place both petri dishes on the class period’s tray 13. Clean up your area and reset your lab station
