Common Lab Equipment

Lab Equipment Used In 7th Grade Science (Click on the equipment list below and draw each piece of equipment and note its function) Beaker Erlenmeyer Flask Graduated Cylinder Test Tube Dissection Kit Scalpel Forceps Probes Hand Lens Dissecting Scissors Metric Ruler Dissecting Tray Dissecting Pins Compound Light Microscope Microscope Slide Cover Slip Petri Dish Safety Goggles Triple-Beam Balance Meter Stick

_____ml Beaker Function - To measure liquids
They come in different sizes so you need to put the size in front of the name. Ex. 100ml Beaker, 250ml Beaker

_____ml Erlenmeyer Flask
Function - To measure liquids and mix them. Erlenmeyer flask also come in different sizes. Ex. 500ml Erlenmeyer Flask

______ml Graduated Cylinder
Function - To accurately measure liquids. Graduated Cylinders come in various sizes. Ex. 10ml Graduated Cylinder.

Test Tube Test tubes have many functions including mixing liquids to observe their reaction.

Dissecting Kit Used for dissection.
Contains: Scalpel, Forceps, Hand Lens, Probes, Dissecting Scissors, and Metric Ruler.

Scalpel Function - To cut open a specimen you will be dissecting.

Forceps Function - To hold and move parts you should not touch.

Probes Function - To move and push aside materials during a dissection. A dissecting kit contains a straight probe and a bent probe.

Hand Lens Function - To magnify small objects for viewing. H

Dissecting Scissors Function - To cut specimen you are dissecting. Often used to cut through small bones.

Metric Ruler Function - To measure the length of small objects in centimeters or millimeters.

Dissecting Tray Function - Provides a place to dissect your specimen and a surface to stick dissecting pins into.

Dissecting Pins Function - To hold a specimen down to the dissecting tray.

Compound Light Microscope
Function - To magnify very small objects, and observe objects you cannot see with the naked eye. Click above to start a short video on microscopes

Microscope Slide Function - To hold the object you are looking at on the microscope.

Cover Slip Function - To cover the object you are looking at on the microscope. It helps in making wet mounts which you will learn about later.

Petri Dish Function - Provides a surface for you to experiment on various materials. In our class we will use them to grow bacteria and fungi.

Safety Goggles Function - Keeps your eyes safe from dangerous liquids that may cause permanent eye damage.

Triple-Beam Balance Function - To measure the mass of an object in grams.

Meter Stick Function - To measure the length of objects in centimeters or meters.
