CROYDON London’s First Fairtrade Borough

Fairtrade Town Goals GOAL 1 - The local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens. GOAL 2 - A range of products are available in the area’s shops, and served in local cafes. GOAL 3 - Fairtrade products are used by a number of local businesses and organisations. GOAL 4 - Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign. GOAL 5 - A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town Status.

GOAL FIVE ACHIEVED January 2002 Some committed individuals organise a Fairtrade Open Meeting for politicians, Council’s Agenda 21, community groups and local residents - more than 50 attend. Result: FAIRTRADE STEERING GROUP set up, called the ‘Croydon Fairtrade Network’, to move Croydon towards Fairtrade status.

GOAL ONE ACHIEVED February 2002 Croydon Fairtrade Network lobby the Council. Result: Council PASSED A RESOLUTION supporting Fairtrade, agreed to use Fairtrade tea and coffee and to introduce Fairtrade to residential homes, schools and libraries.

GOAL FOUR ACHIEVED January 02 - March 03 Croydon Fairtrade Network organise many activities - supermarket tastings, church events, the Croydon Green Fair, a Co-op sponsored ‘Chocolate Challenge’, Open Meetings - and gain press coverage... Result: RAISED PUBLIC AWARENESS AND GENERATED MEDIA COVERAGE

GOAL FOUR ACHIEVED January 02 - March 03 The Co-op, Council and Network invite the public to a Fairtrade Chocolate Challenge The Croydon Fairtrade Network raise awareness at the Green Fair, Summer 2002

GOALS TWO & THREE January 02 onwards Further to awareness raising activities, 1:1 rallying of local organisations, and retailer sticker produced Result: A RANGE OF FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS are now on SALE in more than 60 of Croydon’s SHOPS, CAFES and CHURCHES and USED by many local organisations

GOALS TWO & THREE Promotion Leaflet raising awareness of local Fairtrade activity, and retailer sticker for those that sell Fairtrade products
