Island Glades Gospel Centre Series: The Christian and Tithing 12 th Sept Part 1 – Do Christians Tithe?

P ART 1 D O C HRISTIANS T ITHE ? A. W HAT IS T ITHING ? 1. The Meaning of Tithe. a. Etymologically: Heb. ma'aser, from root = a tenth; thus, a tithe. i. Abraham gave tithes to Melchizedek. Gen. 14:20; Heb. 7:4 ii. Jacob vowed the tenth to the Lord.Gen. 28:22 b. Biblically: In the Levitical system, this word refers to the Tenth part, the Tithe. c. Practically: Israelites to tithe their land, herds, flocks, and other sources. Lev. 27:30-32 Such tithes were to support the Levites in their priestly duties, Num.18:21, …as well as strangers, orphans, and widows.Deut. 26:12

1. The Meaning of Tithe a. Etymologically b. Biblically c. Practically d. Historically: i. When Israel failed to tithe, it was a Demonstration of their Disobedience. Mal. 3:8, 10 ii. When they Reinstituted the tithe, it was a sign of Reform, as in Hezekiah’s…2 Chr. 31:5, 6, 12 and Nehemiah’s times.Neh.10:37, 38; 12:44 2. The First Mention of Tithing. Gen. 14:20 a. Abram gave (Melchisedec) Tithes of all. i. It was an Act of tribute to Acknowledge one’s superior.

1. The Meaning of Tithe. 2. First Mention of Tithing.Gen. 14:20 a. Abram gave (Melchisedec) Tithes of all. i. It was an Act of tribute to Acknowledge one’s superior. ii. It was in Anticipation of the Aaronic-Levitical priesthood  This Priesthood would be Inferior to the Melchizedek Priesthood. Heb. chs. 5-7  Levi was In Abraham paying Tribute to the Melchizedek Priesthood. Heb. 7:5-9 The Levites have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham… Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham for Levi was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him. Heb. 7:5, 9, 10

1. The Meaning of Tithe. 2. First Mention of Tithing. Gen. 14:20 a. Abram gave (Melchisedec) Tithes of all. b. Melchizedek was a Type of Christ as the unique King-Priest. i. To be King an Israelite must be from the tribe of Judah. Cf. Gen. 49:10 ii. To be Priest, an Israelite must be from the tribe of Levi. Deut. 10:8, 9; Num. 18:6 iii. But Jesus was a King-Priest because He was from the order of Melchizedek:Gen. 14:18; Heb. 7:1, 2 He was king of Salem…and he was the priest of the most high God. Thus, the Levitical priesthood, paying tithes to the Melchizedek priesthood, acknowledged the latter’s superiority even before it was brought into existence by the command of God. Heb. 7:8-10

1. The Meaning of Tithe. 2. The First Mention of Tithing. 3. The Subsequent mention of Tithing (in Leviticus). Lev. 27:30-32 a. The Statements Relating to tithing.27:30-33 i. The Practical Reminder of God’s Proprietorship in His People and in their Possessions. 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD. ii. The Proportionate Redemption of the Tithe of the land – a Payment of 120% of the value. 27:31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof. iii. The Prohibited Redemption of those that passed under the Rod.27:32, 33 The tenth to be Counted was Compulsory to be tithed. It could not be Changed or Commutated for another.

a. The Statements Relating to Tithing. Lev. 27:30-33 b. Tithing was already a Reality for all Israel in its 2 nd occurrence in Scripture. c. Tithing was a Responsibility which the LORD commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai – it was part of the Law. 4. The last mention of Tithing in Scripture. Heb. 7:5-9 a. It refers to the Levites receiving tithes of their brethren as commanded in the Law:7:5 Verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren. b. Yet Levi had to pay tithes in the Loins of Abraham to Melchizedek. 7:9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.

4. The last mention of Tithing in Scripture. Heb. 7:5-9 a. Levites received tithes of their brethren. 7:5 b. Yet Levi paid tithes in the Loins of Abraham to Melchizedek. 7:9 c. Demonstrating that Melchizedek, a Living priesthood, was superior to that of the Levites: Heb. 7:6, 7 i. Because Melchizedek received tithes from Abraham and blessed him. He whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. ii. And Christ is of the order of Melchizedek Who Lives to receive tithes from the Lesser:Heb. 7:8, Here men that die receive tithes; but there He receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that He liveth. iii. And we are of Christ’s priesthood; therefore we pay Tribute to Him and not Tithes under the law!

A. W HAT IS T ITHING ? B. W HO TO T ITHE AND TO WHOM IS IT GIVEN ? Lev. 27: Who to pay the Tithes – Num. 18:21 * When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance. * These are the commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.Lev. 27:34 2. Whom to pay the Tithes to – Num. 18:26 I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the Tent of Meeting. 3. It was God’s Provision for His Servants who Served Him in His Sanctuary.

A. W HAT IS T ITHING ? B. W HO TO T ITHE AND TO W HOM IS IT G IVEN ? C. W HY T ITHE ? 1. In Acknowledgement of God’s Overall Ownership of all things. a. He owned all things by right of Creation.Psa. 50:10-12 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine…for the world is Mine, and the fulness thereof. Hence, Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High.Psa. 50:14 b. Because He owned Israel by Choice:Deut. 7:6 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto Himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

C. W HY T ITHE ? 1. It is in Acknowledgement of God’s Overall Ownership of all things. 2. Because of God’s Appointment of Levi as Priests to Serve in the Sanctuary. Num. 18:6 And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel: ….to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation. a. Levi was not given any earthly inheritance. The Lord was their inheritance. Lev. 18:1-5; Num. 18:20-24; Deut. 10:9; 18:2; Josh. 13:14, 33 cf. 21:3 The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel... the LORD is their inheritance…For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever. b. Israel’s Partaking of the offerings and tithes was His Provision for His Priests. Deut. 18:1 The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and His inheritance. But the tithes of the children of Israel… I have given to the Levites to inherit: Num. 18:24

C. W HY T ITHE ? 1. In Acknowledgement of God’s Ownership of all things. 2. God’s Appointment of Levi as Priests to Serve in Sanctuary 3. A. W HAT IS T ITHING ? B. W HO TO T ITHE AND T O W HOM IS IT G IVEN ? C. W HY T ITHE ? D. H OW TO T ITHE 1. No Person was Appointed Assessor. Each man was to Act as his own Assessor : it was a transaction between each man and his God. 2. Every Plan was Devised to suit the convenience of the Debtor. Deut. 14:24-26 He might bring his tithe to the temple, either in kind or in coin. 3. No Penalty for Dishonesty was Described. It taught him to act with integrity towards the “Searcher of hearts.”

A. W HAT IS T ITHING ? B. W HO TO T ITHE AND T O W HOM IS IT G IVEN ? C. W HY T ITHE ? D. H OW T O T ITHE ? E. R OBBING G OD OF H IS T ITHES.Mal. 3: The Context of the Text. It was addressed to... a. The Priests who Despised God’s Name: Mal. 1:6, 7 O priests, that despise My name. b. The People who Dealt treacherously with God: Mal. 2:11 Judah hath dealt treacherously... for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which He loved c. The Populace who Defrauded God Ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Mal. 3:8b, 9b

E. R OBBING G OD OF H IS T ITHES.M AL. 3: The Context of the Text. 2. The Complaint and the Challenge in the Text. Mal. 3:8 -10 a. The Complaint: Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed Me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed Thee? b. The Confirmation: In tithes and offerings - no tithes in the storehouse and no meat in God’s house! c. The Challenge: Mal. 3:10-12 Bring ye all the tithes...and [I will] pour you out a blessing… And all nations shall call you Blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts. Prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts.

E. R OBBING G OD OF H IS T ITHES M AL. 3: The Context of the Text.Mal. 3: The Complaint and the Challenge in the Text.Mal. 3: The Circumstances in Malachi’s time were similar to those in Nehemiah’s Time: a.The People had failed to Pay their Tithes. Neh. 13:10-12 cf. 10:37-39 I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them. b.The Priests were robbed of their Provisions and they had to go to the field to work. The Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. * Thus, the Malachi text should be rightly applied to Israel who failed God, disobeyed and defrauded Him, AND NOT TO THE C HURCH WHO ARE NOT OBLIGED TO TITHE.

Conclusion: The tithe system was introduced for the other tribes to provide for the Levitical priests and to sustain them. *The children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD (Josh. 21:3). They did so, on the basis that God owned their Persons and Property, and they were to acknowledge this by giving back to God a tenth of whatever God had blessed them with – thus, the tithe. Tithing was compulsory for Israel as a means of sustenance for the priests because they would not be working to earn an income – they would be serving the Lord full-time. Then do Christians tithe? N O THEY DO NOT. What do they do? See Part 2 of our study. But why do some Christian leaders do, and advocate tithing? There are two possible reasons. Part 2 will clarify.
