Plants use carbon dioxide from the air and make food. This is photosynthesis. Animals get the carbon when they eat plants. Respiration puts carbon dioxide back into the air. Plants take up nitrates from soil. They use them to make proteins. Animals eat the plants. When things die, bacteria decay them. In soil, bacteria change ammonia to nitrates. Plants take these into their roots. DNA also has nitrogen in it.
