You Did it! Way to go!  In both pictures, the bar is divided into 4 equal parts and three parts are shaded. Even though they are not the same three parts, both still represent ¾.

Let’s Review (Answers)  12/3 is an example of an improper fraction.  In ⅗ the number 3 is the numerator.  ½ and 4/8 are equivalent fractions.  ⅘ is a fraction. It means that there are 5 equal pieces in the whole and 4 are being considered.  A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction, like 2⅞  The denominator tells you how many equal parts are in the whole.

Equivalent Fractions  Equivalent fractions are fractions that name the same amount. Take a look at the picture. 1/2 = 2/4 1/2 = 3/6 5/10=4/8 Notice that all the fraction bars line up and they are all equivalent.

Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Review  Mixed Numbers 2 ½ or 3 ⅚ are both examples of mixed numbers. You can turn a mixed number into a fraction by multiplying and adding.  Mixed Number into Fraction Multiply the whole number and the denominator. Then, add the numerator. The denominator STAYS the same! Go to the next slide to check it out.  Improper Fractions Are “top heavy” The numerator is greater than the denominator.  Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers Look at the fraction as a division sign. In the example, you would do 7 divided by 5. The quotient is the whole number, the remainder is the numerator and the denominator stays the SAME.

Add and Subtract Fractions with Like Denominators  When adding or subtracting fractions with LIKE denominators, you add the numerators ONLY and keep the denominator the same.  3 – 1 = 3 – 1 =

Think about It On your sheet of paper, write the answers to the following questions. Make sure to write in complete sentences.  Name 3 things that require the use of fractions?  You are baking a cake, it calls for ¾ cup of sugar. You do not have a ¾ cup, how are you going to measure out the correct amount of sugar?  How are fractions related to measurement?  Write 2 things you learned and 2 things you still need to work on.
