Unit 1: Fraction Review Use this PowerPoint to practice the skills you will be tested on!

Find Equivalent Fractions There are two rules for finding equivalent fractions. Rule 1: Multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number. Rule 2: Divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number. Examples: 2 3 x 3 3 = 6 9 6 8 2 2 = 3 4.. This works because we are multiplying 2/3 by “1 whole”. Anything x 1 equals itself (even though the fraction looks different!) This works because we are dividing 6/8 by “1 whole”. Anything divided by 1 equals itself (even though the fraction looks different!)

Let’s Practice! You Try… 3 9 4 7 5 6 Check Your Answers… 169121518 3 18 273645 54 81216202428 14 21 28 35 42 49 101520253035 1218 24 30 36 42

Changing Mixed Numbers into fractions… Step 1: Ask, “How many pieces are in each whole?” Step 2: Count your total number of pieces. Step 3: Write total number of pieces in the numerator. Step 4: Keep the denominator the same. Example: 3 3 8 How many eighths do I have altogether? 8883+++ = 27 8

Let’s Practice! You try… 2 6 5 Check your answers… 4 7 1 2 3 9 18 7 13 2 48 9

Changing Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers… Step 1: Find out how many wholes you can make. Step 2: Write the whole number. Step 3: Find how many pieces are left over. Step 4: Write the left over pieces as a fraction, the denominator stays the same. Example: 16 5 1 Whole 1 fifth+++ 3 = 1 5

Let’s Practice! You try… 18 10 11 5 9 4 Check your answer… 1 2 2 8 10 or 4 5 1 1 5 1 4

Adding fractions with fraction sticks… Step 1: Color the fraction stick for the first fraction (do not just color the numerator amount! Think about what the whole is.) Step 2: Color the fraction stick for the second fraction. Step 3: Write the new fraction. Example: 2 4 + 2 8 = 6 8 or 3 4

Let’s Practice! You try… Check your answer… 1 2 1 8 3 4 1 8 5 8 10 16 + + + = = = 5 8 7 8 19 16 or 1 16 3
