Instructional Strategies Socratic Seminar Problem-Based Learning Project-Based Learning Journaling Universal Design for Learning

Socratic Seminar Enable students to think for themselves Questions are the driving force Reflection through journaling/discussion

Students learn the difference between dialogue and debate VS.

Socratic Seminar Practice Why is a global perspective important in today’s society?

Problem vs. Project Based Learning Problem-Based Product emphasis Process emphasis Project-Based

The “flow” of PBL: Problem Engagement Inquiry and Investigation problem definition Problem Resolution Problem Debriefing Stepien & Gallagher What is Problem-Based Learning? Engage Investigate Resolve Reflect

KNOWNEEDDO Explore the issues. What do I already KNOW Investigate solutions. What do we NEED to know and DO to solve this problem? Is Global Studies the best placement for MY child?

Service Learning Component Has an academic connection…it is not volunteering. Written reflection to enhance the experience. Occurs during the school day. Results in students becoming global citizens. Community service is prized by college admission officers and scholarship committees.

Service Learning Examples International cookbook “Are You Smarter Than an 8 th Grader?” with Katie Stam Weekly AV announcements Winter sports pep rally

Biology I Open to current 7 th grade AC students. Mrs. Lanam will be the teacher. This will be for high school credit. Students take Biology I Core 40 test but do not have to pass for credit.

Nuts and Bolts Students may come from NS or Central districts Can be AC, regular education or ESL The teachers are VERY excited about the pathway.

China Trip Traveled to China in March and October to set-up a sister school More teachers going this April Waiting to reciprocate their hospitality

High School Options Offered at both Columbus North High School and Columbus East High School Please refer to the handout

Application On the Northside website Or can use the paper copy The deadline is March 11, 2011.

Frequently Asked Questions How will this impact AC? How will you select students for this pathway? What if my student starts on this pathway and is unable to handle a foreign language? Will the homework load be heavier?

Is Global Studies Pathway a good fit for my child? Students in GSP will have a World Language class instead of Resource. Did my child pass the LA portion of the ISTEP test? Did my child earn an “A” or “B” in English on his/her last report card?

More Questions? Please fill out the “question” sheet you received upon entering OR Amy Dixon at OR Call Amy Dixon at I will stay after to answer as many questions as I can tonight.
