Virtual Services Platform – Introducing a New Addition Virtual Services Platform 8000 Series

Avaya Core/Fabric Switch Portfolio Core Switch for large Data Center and Campus High performance & high-density 10 Gigabit Ultra-resiliency, scalability, & ready for 40/100 Gigabit Where there is a need for sophisticated conventional & virtualized networking VSP 9000 Core Switch for large Enterprise Campus & mid-sized (Gigabit-centric) Data Center Environments that value high-availability & high-performance Where there is a need for sophisticated conventional & virtualized networking The positioning of the new VSP 8000 Series, relative to other existing products, is quite clear. While the 8000 leverages the core of the VSP 9000’s proven Carrier-grade VOS, the 8000 is clearly a less ‘engineered’ product, it’s tightly integrated from a hardware perspective, and is design to fit into a range of deployment scenarios that value cost-effectiveness and simplicity over massive scalability and hardware versatility. The VSP 8000 delivers Chassis-like capabilities, leveraging next-generation chipsets that deliver seamless integration of performance and functionality, and with all of the operational simplicity of a traditional non-Chassis offering. ERS 8800 Core Switching solution for mid-market and medium-sized networks Provides mass 10 Gigabit for aggregation, plus 40 Gigabit backbone links Aggregation Switch in multi-tier networks, or End-of-Row in the Data Center Where there is a need for plug-and-play conventional or virtualized networking Satisfies the performance & resiliency needs without the Chassis penalties VSP 8000

Introducing the Compact Form Factor The new best-practice for main stream networking Game-changing capabilities Higher port density Better price/port Lower entry price point More power efficient Reduced maintenance Smaller footprint Easy scalability Chassis penalties avoided Transition from Modular to Compact From One-Size-Fits-All to Right-Size

Ingredients for Success Confluence of Advancements Technology trends create a watershed opportunity Die Shrink comes to Networking Scale-out port density combines with better power & space metrics Fabric-capable & SDN-ready Flexible for today & strategic for tomorrow Interfaces move from Modules to Transceivers Another problem disappears Ingredients for Success Tipping Point Created Next-Generation Chipset Connector Unification Network Virtualization

Delivering Highly Available for the Edge Improved Resiliency, Superior Value Compact Form-Factor combines with Switch Cluster Equivalent to the Traditional Chassis CPU Switch Fabric Power Cooling Link Resiliency Enhancements Physical Independence Control Plane Independence In-Service Software Upgrades Delivering Highly Available for the Edge Wiring Closet/Edge One of the typical rationales for a Chassis-base Core is that a big, complex, expensive device is the only really dependable option. However, always-on availability is not so much a function of the hardware but more a product of the solution. Switch Cluster delivers this, and when Switch Cluster is delivered on a compact form factor, it provides a compelling offering for the mid-market and smaller Core deployments in the Enterprise. In short, rather than over-investing in ‘highly resilient’ Chassis, with redundant hardware, but vulnerable control plane and network solutions aspects, we enhance the survivability of the network through physical separation of the Core. Avaya pioneered the concept of the high-availability network with it developed the Switch Cluster technology more than a decade ago. Making a single, unified, logical Core with two physically independent Switches – Clustering them – ensures that no one single point-of-failure can disrupt dual/multi-homed connectivity. This is the essence of always-on availability. The Switch Cluster in the Core delivers high-availability to the Edge, be that the Campus Wiring Closet, or Servers, Routers, or other networking devices in the Core/Data Center. Therefore building a Core using a Switch Cluster of cost-effective compact form-factor VSP 8000 Series Switches enhances the resiliency posture. In addition to the various high-availability factors offered by expansive Chassis-based products (i.e. CPU, Switch Fabric, Power, Cooling, and of course Link), the combination of Switch Cluster and distributed hardware delivers total physical independent, including the ability to have the ‘Core’ split and deployed in different physical locations, independent and isolated control planes (meaning that there’s genuine process separation, isolation, and protection), and in-service software upgrades and be easily enacted. The VSP 8000 Series brings to the mid-sized Core all of the advantages that Switch Cluster deployed in Avaya’s Chassis-based products has enjoyed for years, but of course now offering it at a vastly different price point. When Less Is More

Single, Unified, Logical Core Deployment Flexibility Switch Cluster Evolves to Empower the Scale-out Core Conventional Core VLANs OSPF, RIP, VRRP, PIM etc. Fabric Core VLANs, L2 VSNs IP Shortcuts, VRRP, Multicast etc. Virtual IST Single, Unified, Logical Core Virtual IST MLT Another of the justifications for a Chassis-base Core is that it delivers flexibility of hardware and therefore ensures scalability. True, but comes at a cost; it costs in terms of initial capital, ongoing operational, and even in terms of future expansion; every component has a a premium attached and often life cycle considerations mean that the flexibility that you thought you’d bought into (and certainly paid for with every single component) doesn’t actually materialize when you wish to exercise it… The VSP 8000 Series implements our Switch Cluster technology in the classic manner, but will also act as the introductory platform for the next evolution of Switch Cluster technology; Virtual IST. Virtual IST is an enhancement of the Inter-Switch Trunk, insofar as it leverages a virtualized connection between the Cluster members, rather that the traditional physical link. This delivers greater flexibility, optimizes the usage and disposition of valuable high-capacity backbone connections, and forms the basis of further developments that will include the scalability of the Cluster beyond two members, and the ability to mix-and-match member device types. Virtual IST delivers the dependable scalability capability to the VSP 8000 Series, and de-risks purchasing decisions by ensuring that the Core can provide both always-on high-availability and flexible pay-as-you-grow efficiencies.
