Creating Coherence in a Text English sentence structure builds on the basic structure of Subject - Verb - Object. To create coherence in a text, we must link consecutive sentences by repeating elements of the S-V-O structure. We have several ways of doing this. S 1 - V - O. OneOne Repeat the subject. S - V 2 - O. S 2 - V - O. TwoTwo Change the verb into the next subject S 3 - V - O.S - V - O 3. ThreeThree Make the object into the next subject. S 1 - V - O.Adv 1, S - V - O. FourFour Repeat the S, V, or O in an adverbial. FiveFive Other methods

S 1 - V - O. Repeat the subject. S 1 - V - O.S 1a - V - O. Repeat the subject with modification. Therefore, we must find combinations of the drugs that are stable in solution. Furthermore, we have to examine the stability of the mixture over time (at 0, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours). We test the stability by using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). BackBack to the first slide Cyclosporine A based immunosuppression remains to date the treatment of choice to prevent and to reduce the incidence of organ rejection. However, its side-effects, which include nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, hypertension, and hyperglycemia, prohibit its long term use.

S - V 1 - O. S 2 - V - O. Change the verb into the next subject The body naturally rejects transplants. In fact, acute rejection is the major cause of graft loss in transplants. BackBack to the first slide

S 2 - V - O.S - V - O 1. Make the object into the next subject. Thus, we must use formal verification. Formal verification uses high order logic to test circuits. Currently, the most effective drug for such immunosuppression is cyclosporine A. However, it has serious side-effects. BackBack to the first slide

The acceleration of a high-speed aircraft produces a force on the pilot which can be many times greater than the force of gravity. Under this force, the weight of blood is increased and blood pressure to the brain is decreased. When this happens, the pilot first loses his vision and then loses consciousness. S 1 - V - O.Adv 1, S - V - O. Repeat (or refer to) the S, V, or O in an adverbial. BackBack to the first slide

Coherence also can be created by other varieties of repetion. In any case, some element of a sentence should be repeated in the next sentence. If these two formulas are equal after logical reasoning, the implementation has satisfied the specification and the circuit is verified. If they are not equal, the circuit is not verified and the implementation must be rewritten. In this text, the two adverbial clauses are parallel: Under this force, the weight of blood is increased and blood pressure to the brain is decreased. When this happens, the pilot first loses his vision and then loses consciousness. To protect the pilot’s vision and consciouness, current research aims at minimizing the decrease of blood supply to the pilot’s brain. Here, the verb becomes part of the object two sentences later: BackBack to the first slide
