Transcendentalism & “Walden” by Thoreau
Grab a copy of the transcendentalism notes handout & a copy of Thoreau’s “Walden.” Read the first paragraph of Thoreau’s “Walden,” & annotate one line from “Walden” by underlining it & numbering it the number of the transcendental element (AKA: If the third sentence seems like transcendental element #4 then underline it & mark a “4” beside it). ( Do your best; if you struggle, remember that we will discuss this) Bell Work – 4 mins.
Students will read “Walden” & annotate & discuss Thoreau’s inclusion of transcendental style. Standard: Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Target:
We will share your bell work finds. We will read on & annotate as we read as a class. We will share annotations & repeat. You will then read on your own a portion of the text, & we’ll come together to share your findings by the end. Agenda:
What elements were found? What priorities in life do you think are important to Thoreau? Bell Work – Let’s Hear It
We’ll read to ________ (popcorn style). As we read, actively annotate. I challenge you to find one annotation each paragraph. We’ll stop periodically to explain the narrative & share findings, so be on your toes & keep up. Let’s Read On!
You will read to ________. As you read, create 5 additional annotations. Your Turn – 8 mins.
What was this portion of the text about? Do your beliefs about Thoreau’s priorities hold up? Do you think he has additional values to what you already mentioned? Let’s Discuss
Turn to a partner next to you. Share annotations ( I want to see you actively underlining & marking lines your partners have that you don’t). After you share with one partner, I want to see you alternate to someone else & share findings. Group Up: Share Findings
Read to ________ in “Walden” & continue annotating. Find as many elements as you can. Have these out during bell work tomorrow. I will come around and check to see if you have at least 5 annotations from this portion of the text. Having 5 will result in a 10-point homework grade. Having less will result in less points.
