2 Objectives  Define direct and indirect characterization  Identify methods used in indirect characterization  Use context clues to infer word meanings

3 Common Core Standards  RL.11-12.1 Cite strong and thorough evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. L.11-12.4a Use context as a clue to the meanings of a word or phrase.

4 Bell Work  Imagine your best friend or a person you greatly admire.  Write down three sentence illustrating qualities that you like or admire about this person (use specific character traits or examples of what they have said or done).  Be prepared to share your answers.

5 Discussion  What techniques did you use to describe this person?

6 Characterization  Direct Characterization  Indirect characterization - thoughts feelings and actions - interactions

7 Classwork:  Complete the Characterization part of the worksheet. This will be turned in for a grade! worksheet

8 Homework  Read Chapter Three and answer questions for Friday / Mondayanswer questions  Read Chapter four and answer questions for Tuesday / Wednesday
