Macromedia Captivate for Information Literacy “Show-Me” Tutorials Presented by MILEX Member: Sean Henry, MLS, PhD Frostburg State University 1 June 2006

Information Literacy Defined “Information literacy is an understanding and set of abilities enabling individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the capacity to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.” American Library Association(1989)

Information Literacy Challenges since 1989: The Internet Distance Education Limited face-to-face time with students How can we effectively teach students to locate, access, and evaluate library resources when they’re rarely in the building?

Macromedia Captivate: An E-Learning Solution Records or “screencasts” on- screen applications as easily editable and Web-optimized flash movies. Good for “show-me” tutorials, software and database simulations. Includes pre-built quiz templates and scores user interactions. Integrates well with other e-learning tools, like Blackboard.

A Captivate Tutorial Scenario: How do I find a journal in the Library Catalog? Your professor has asked you to find the article below: Morawski, J. (2000). Social psychology a century ago. American Psychologist, 55(4), 427–430. Your professor says that this article is located in the library. How do you find it? Find out how to find journals in the catalog with our Flash tutorial! Flash tutorial!

Making A Movie Prepare and rehearse your script. Open Captivate and select “Record new movie” Start recording! Go slowly. Click the Captivate toolbar icon to stop. Captivate automatically renders the movie into slides for you to edit. Voice narration becomes an MP3 file. Click “Publish” and the program turns your movie into a Web page with an embedded flash movie.

You can record the whole screen or define a custom-sized recording area Voice narration is optional, but easy with your computer’s microphone Click Record to begin Let’s Start Recording!

As you record, Captivate follows your mouse movements. Click on the Captivate toolbar icon to stop recording.

Editing a Movie Captivate’s editing interface resembles PowerPoint’s. Captivate automatically adds customizable caption text boxes to your mouse motions. You can adjust the timing of on- screen events or edit your voice recording. You can insert buttons to pause the movie until the viewer is ready to continue.

Let’s Edit! Edit timing of onscreen events in the timeline. You can edit the narration, too. Captivate automatically adds captions for you, but you can customize them.

Assess with a Quiz or Survey Captivate supports six different question types (multiple choice, T/F, fill-in- the-blank, short answer, matching, and Likert) User interactions and scores can be reported to the instructor or librarian in a variety of ways (via , Blackboard, WebCT, etc.)

Here’s the setup screen for a multiple-choice question slide

Demonstration Over You viewed a sample Captivate tutorial and noted its potential for information literacy tutorials and assessments.
