Dual Award students completed GCSE Core in Year 10 and are now following GCSE Additional. Triple students completed Biology and chemistry in Year 10 and are now working on their final GCSE Physics. BTEC students completed Principles in Year 10 and have started BTEC Applications in Year 11.

GCSE Additional 4 units, one internal controlled assessment worth 25%, marked by your child’s teacher and externally moderated by Edexcel. 75% of the course is assessed by terminal exams all in June. No re-sits – one shot only. Each unit is a 1 hour paper on separate days.

KEY AREAS B2 Literacy; B2.1 has 53 subject specific terms C2 Abstract ideas; Ionic, Covalent and Metallic bonding Numeracy; Chemical calculations P2 Numeracy; Being able to re-arrange equations will give students on average a 1/3 of their mark without having tackled content Key areas on the GCSE Additional course that students find difficult are; Biology, over 170 keywords – some students have said it’s like learning a new language. Chemistry has a lot of abstract ideas that students find difficult to visualise and formulas for calculations must be recalled from memory and re-arranged as necessary.

Literacy Use foldables, keyword fans, and mind maps created in the classroom or as homework to test recall of definitions and facts.

Every chemistry exam contains a copy of the Periodic table Understanding how the Periodic Table is organised will help students to work out answers to electron arrangement, ionic and covalent bonding questions.

Choose the right formula, pick out key data from the question, re-arrange and calculate
