What is Science? Word Wall #1 7th Grade Science

Variable A factor that can affect the result of an experiment.

Independent/Test Variable The one variable that is purposely changed to test the hypothesis. Hint: it is what you do in the experiment.

Dependent/Outcome variable The factor that changes in response to the independent variable. Hint: generally, this is what you measure in your results.

Qualitative Data An observation/description that cannot be expressed with numbers.

Quantitative Data An observation that deals with numbers or amounts.

Hypothesis A possible answer to a scientific question. Also a testable statement.

Inference When an observation is explained or interpreted.

Observation Determining something by using your five senses. Recognizing or noting a fact or occurrence.
