Think you’ve got what it takes to be a writing tutor? Apply to take Advanced Composition next year! Applications due Friday 3/13!

What is Advanced Composition? Course for 11 th and 12 th graders and teacher-nominated 10 th graders Works in conjunction with the West Springfield Writing Center (WSWC) to train tutors and staff the Center In-depth study of writing across all disciplines in order to become better tutors and advance one’s own writing “One big, writing-loving family” (actual quote from a past Adv Comp students)

What does a writing tutor do? WSWC tutors help WSHS students with their writing by asking questions, responding as readers, and assisting students in clarifying and improving the work they bring in This assistance can cover any stage of the writing process, from when a student is given an assignment to when a student asks for proofreading help.

What is my commitment as a tutor? TIME – Aside from tutoring during class, you will be expected to sign up for a few after-school and/or Spartan Time sessions per quarter. Attending your sessions counts as part of your grade. DEDICATION to the cause – Please only apply if you are truly interested in helping your peers and becoming part of the WSWC “team”

What do I get out of it? Training Improved Writing Recognition (unusual experience that will make you stand out when applying to college or for jobs) Service Hours (any work done above the course requirements can count) Limited daily homework – most assignments are long-term or done in class

What current/past Adv Comp students have to say: “While some kids look to the auditorium, the journalism room, or the football field for a their ‘home away from home’ at West Springfield, I come to room 283 to settle into my niche” “I’ve learned to teach just as much as how to learn.” “I have gained social skills I hadn’t even realized I had lacked in the past.” “Because of Adv Comp, I would love to continue working in a Writing Center or even start one when I get to college.” “Applying for Adv Comp is one of the best decisions I ever made.”

How do I apply? Take a paper application from Ms. Goransson today or apply on the Writing Center website (WSHS home page  Students  Writing Center) Turn it in by Fri 3/13 (electronically or hard copy) IMPORTANT NOTE: When you register for courses, include Advanced Composition even if you have not yet heard from us about your acceptance!

For more information about the WSWC: Come visit us when we’re open! – All lunches Mon-Wed, All Spartan Times, and Wed. 2:20-4 Click our link on the WSHS homepage. Find us on facebook (Look up “West Springfield Writing-Center”) Follow us on twitter! Watch us on YouTube at (See a video of what a tutoring session looks like!)

Any questions?
