FLAVIUS BELISARIUS Ronnie L. Cox Mrs. Marshall Walter Stiern Middle School 7 th grade Standard: HSS 7.6

THE FACTS ON BELISARIUS He was born in 505A.D. and died 60 years later in 565A.D. Born in “Germania”, a district on the border of Thrace and Macedonia. His name is supposed to be Slavonic. He served in the bodyguard of Justinian as a youth. Justinian appointed him commander of the eastern army when Belisarius was 20.

BELISARIUS’S CHILDHOOD Not much is known about his childhood, though experts believe he was fully Romanized. His name is “WHITE PRINCE” in Slavic which scientist believe meant he must be from some kind of royalty.

BELISARIUS’S YOUNG WAR LIFE Belisarius became the main general for Justinian. He was a Christian but had problems with the pope. Belisarius also helped Justinian regain the western part of the Roman Empire. His first assignment was to fight the Persians, But Belisarius (after some fighting) made the “Endless Peace” peace treaty.

BELISARIUS’S WAR LIFE (cont) Belisarius was put in charge of the whole army and began to fight the Vandals. He almost lost the first battle because of Gemilimer (the Vandal that was causing trouble), who had unknown strategies. However, soon Belisarius overwhelmed Gemilimer’s army and defeated the Vandals.

BELISARIUS’S REGAINING ITALY Belisarius was sent to conquer Italy, but also ended up conquering Rome, Naples, Milan, and the Ostogoth capital of Ravenna. Then emperor Justinian decided to take only half the gold and leave the Ostogoth in an independent kingdom of Italy, and Belisarius didn’t like this at all. So Belisarius didn’t agree to it making the Ostogoths think that Belisarius was the trustworthy one.

BELISARIUS’S PUNISHMENT Soon Belisarius was sent back to Constantinople and then went to fight the Persians. This time he was NOT so successful but he at least managed to make another peace treaty. This time the peace was to last five years.

BELISARIUS’S TRUST UNDONE When Belisarius returned to Italy, the Ostogoths had regained most of they’re territories including Rome. Since Justinian didn’t trust Belisarius anymore, Belisarius regained Rome only to lose it again. Soon, 548A.D., Belisarius was replaced by another general by the name of Narses.

BELISARIUS’S RETIREMENT Belisarius retired after he lost all the trust he had with Justinian, another general replaced him, and when he was getting old. Belisarius was then charged with corruption but was then brought out of jail by Justinian.

BELISARIUS’S DEATH He died in 565A.D. only weeks after Justinian. Because of their partnership, the roman empire grew by 45%.
