THE USE OF MIXED CONDITIONALS Mixed second/third – describes a hypothetical situation or event in the present, the result in the main clause refers to the past. Mixed third/second – describes a hypothetical situation or event in the past, the result refers to the present.

Mixed second /third If the island were still a tourist attraction, last week’s earthquake would’ve caused far more deaths.

If I were taller, I could have won the beauty contest last month.

Mixed third/second If I had set the alarm clock, I wouln’t be late now.

You wouldn’t have a splitting headache if you hadn’t drunk so much alcohol at the party last night.
