The following slides will walk you through the process for determining an overall learning progression score. Scoring Score each component in the learning progression (A, B, etc.) For each learning progression, calculate an overall Learning Progression Level. Record the Learning Progression Level on the Student Record Sheet Only the overall learning progression level scores for each child need to be reported to EMIS For sample score sheets: http://www.sstr1.org or http://ela.sstr1.org In general, this will be the procedure to follow: Again, we’re assuming that you already know how to score the separate components of the learning progression. After you’ve scored all the separate components, you’ll need to calculate an overall learning progression level for each learning progression. Once you’ve determined the learning progression level, record that level on the Student Record Sheet. Only the learning progression levels for each child will need to be submitted to EMIS. You may develop your own overall score sheet or use the sample score sheets provided on this site at the link provided in the powerpoint NEXT We’ll go through some examples …

Example 1 Child scores (Level 3 on A) and (Level 2 on B) = overall learning progression Level 2

Child scores (Level 5 on A) and (Level 3 on B) = Child scores (Level 5 on A) and (Level 3 on B) = ??? What is their overall learning progression level? [level 3] Notice in this example that the child demonstrated skill at level 1 on both components, at level 2 on both components, at level 3 on both components, but demonstrated only 1 component at level 4. Therefore the child’s overall learning progression is a level 3 because they demonstrated both components at level 3 including all levels

N Child scores (Level 2 on A) and (N on B) = ??? [Not Yet Evident, they haven't yet mastered the operational definition]

(Level 5 on A), (Level 4 on B) = [4]

(Level 3 on A), (N on B) = [3]

(Level 3 on A), (Level N on B), (Level 3 on C) = [1] For this example, we’ll explain it in more detail. For component A, the child has demonstrated the skills up through Level 3. For component B, the child has not demonstrated skills at Level 2. However, there are no skills listed at Level 1. So you can consider this like the free space in the game of Bingo. For component C, the child has demonstrated the skills up through Level 3. So, for the overall learning progression level, the score would be calculated at a level 1. If you notice, that is the column where all 3 components are highlighted. The child has attained level 1 for all 3 components.

1 on A overall score = 1 – doesn’t matter what score a child gets on B &C if get 1 on A, OVERALL score is still a 1 If you notice when you look at all 3 components, level 1 is the only level where all 3 components are highlighted.

3 on A, N on B = overall = 1 (don’t proceed to C OR doesn’t matter what score gets on C)

3 on A, 3 on B, N on C = overall = 2

5 on A, 5 on B, N on C = overall = 2

3 on A, 1 on B, 2 on C = overall 2

5 on A , 5 on B, 2 on C = overall 3 (because of “free” space)
