Reporting in Kindergarten Preparing to Report

Have the Overall Expectations for each Program Area you addressed that term in front of you Write by Program Area or by child

Gather pertinent assessment information e.g., samples of student work, photographs that depict learning which has taken place, quotes from children about their learning, anecdotal records, conference notes, running records, data such as DRA.

As you write make sure you describe in clear language the child’s progress of the Overall Expectations you are reporting on. I suggest writing in prose. Think of the report as a story being told about a child. K Program suggests anecdotal comments on child’s achievement in relation to Overall Expectations.

Reporting throughout the Kindergarten years must always indicate the child’s growth and achievement in relation to the learning expectations for the end of Kindergarten. Reporting should reflect achievement in the skills and strategies that the children are developing as they progress through the Kindergarten years. (K Program, pg., 10)

Personal examples are meaningful, and help parents better understand the learning which has taken place. At interview time have samples of student work, photographs, anecdotal notes, running records, video clips, etc, ready to share to further help parents understand the learning their child has demonstrated.

Sample Comments S&T -Overall Expectation -Awareness of the Natural World “Jared demonstrates an awareness of the natural and human-made environment through hands-on investigation, observation, and sharing of his findings. During our study of acorns Jared was interested in recording his observations. His work reflected his observation such as “it goes orange at the top” when describing his acorn.

Sample Comment Math- Overall- Understanding of number using concrete materials… “Sasha successfully represents numbers with materials, and demonstrates one to one correspondence in counting objects. She is learning to describe how she sorts and classifies objects.”

Sample Comment Language- Uses reading strategies appropriate for beginning readers… Communicate in writing, using strategies appropriate for beginners. “Ali is learning to use illustrations to support his comprehension as shown with the text, I Like Me, and is making simple connections to his own personal experience, “I am special because I like to dance.”
