How can you help your child make progress in French? Comment pouvez-vous aider votre enfant à progresser en français?

Even if you have little or no knowledge of French yourself, you can help your children by :

1) encouraging them to go on the recommended Language websites and tackle a couple of tasks/games every evening. 10 – 15 minutes’ revision and practice every day is hugely beneficial!

2) asking them to explain to you what they have learnt in today’s French lesson, and even better, teach you what they have learnt. This will reinforce their understanding and make them feel good about being able to teach an adult something new!

3) encouraging them to say a few sentences out loud in French to you every day and asking them in English what they have just said. This consolidates understanding and boosts their confidence.

4) testing them on vocabulary: for instance, access the sections on Animals on Language Nut so that you have the correct answers to refer to and ask your children to say (and write if appropriate) all the names of animals they remember, then ask them what a horse is in French, a rabbit etc.; how many names of animals start with “un” and how many start with “une”... or any other relevant question.

5) listening to them practising short conversations they have learnt in lessons, taking on one of the roles if and when you feel confident enough.

6) encouraging them to listen to French music and watching French cartoons on Youtube under your supervision. Suitable cartoons include « Tom Tom et NaNa » and « Les histoires du Père Castor ».

7) hiring French films on DVD/streaming French films which you can watch together. Suitable films for youngsters include: Jean de Florette (PG), Le Petit Nicolas (PG), La gloire de mon père (U).
