To greet someone, say: ¡Hola! Buenos días, señor. Hello Buenos días, señor. Good morning, sir Buenos tardes, señorita. Good afternoon, miss. Buenos noches, señora. Good evening, ma’an Good night, ma’am

To say goodbye to someone, say Adiós Goodbye Bueno, tengo clase. Well, I have class. Chao. ‘Bye. Hasta luego. See you later. Hasta mañana. See you tomorrow Tengo que irme. I have to go.

Introducing people and responding to an introduction

To introduce yourself, say Me llamo… My name is… Soy… I am… ¿Y tú? ¿Cómo te llamas? And you? What’s your name?

To respond to an introduction, say: ¡Mucho gusto! Nice to meet you! Encantado/a Delighted to meet you. Igualmente. Same here.

To introduce others say: Éste es mi amigo… This is my (male) friend… Éste es mi amiga… This is my (female) friend… Se llama… His/Her name is…

Asking how someone is and saying how you are

To find out how a friend is ask: ¿Cómo estás? How are you? ¿Y tú? And you? ¿Qué tal? How’s it going?

Your friend might say: Estoy (bastante) bien, gracias. Yo también. I’m (pretty) well, thanks. Yo también. Me too Estupendo/a Great. Excelente. Regular. Okay. Más o menos. So-so. (Muy) mal. Very bad. ¡Horrible! Horrible!
