AGENDA Introduction Getting Started Editing a page Common Asset Types Editing Differences Creating a page Publishing Resources

Introduction What is a CMS? – Stands for Content Management System – Is web-based – Allows non-technical authors to update web sites – Allows technical administrators to better manage web sites Like Power Point Presentations, they have an Author Side (editing mode) and a User Side (presentation mode)

Getting Started Logging In – During Training: Go to cmstrain01, cmstrain02, cmstrain03, etc. – Afterwards Go to Use your cougarnet credentials Getting oriented with the CMS home Folders & files just like your PC Parent-child relationships

Editing a page Using the WYSIWYG editor Using --formats-- internal/external links links Inserting images Paste from MS Word – don’t Title, System Name, File Display Name, and Folder Display Name (yes, it’s confusing – we’re working on it)

Common Asset Types Folder with Standard Content Page (your typical web page) News and Events Article File (MSWord docs, powerpoint presentations, pdfs, images, etc) Folder Physical Redirect

Editing Differences Standard Content Page – Banners – Related Links – Wide vs Standard layout News Article (News and Events Article) – Teaser – Story type – Multiple contact infos Folder – Display in menu – Title -> navigation and breadcrumbs Files – Just choose the file, ignore the rest

Creating a page How do you do it: a)The New menu b)Content wizards c)Copying an existing file Automatic Navigation Paths, filenames, and good URLs

Publishing CMS (editing) cms.uh.edu Staging (testing) oracle.matrix.uh.edu:8888 It required VPN from off-campus Don’t let the testing site URL get out to the public! Production (live) Changes are pushed live at the top of the hour For the Main UH Site For Other Sites Ask your site administrator

Resources 508 – Informative links – formats – alt tags UH Resources – UA Marketing – IT Web Technologies – – cms-users listserv Later topics: – Images & Multimedia – Writing for the web – Usability – Developing on the CMS – Administering a CMS site
