What are the main features of a Christian Upbringing?

How does a Christian upbringing lead to, or support, belief in God? A child’s parents will have told them about God and young children believe what their parents tell them. Parents

How does a Christian upbringing lead to, or support, belief in God? Christian parents usually teach their children how to pray. This shows that prayer is a natural and important part of their lives and encourages children to believe in God. Prayer

How does a Christian upbringing lead to, or support, belief in God? Going to church and seeing so many people praying to God and worshipping God is likely to make them think that God must exist. Church

How does a Christian upbringing lead to, or support, belief in God? Going to Sunday school would support belief in God because children would learn why Christians believe in God and what they believe about him.

How does a Christian upbringing lead to, or support, belief in God? Going to Church school would have a similar effect, as God and Christianity would be a normal feature of school life. Church school

Practice Exam Question – Type D Explain how a religious upbringing might make people turn to God. To get full marks you must make fully 3 explained points. To do this use P.E.E. For example: (Point) When a person is young they will tend to believe what their parents say. (Explanation) This is because parents are in position of power. They control what their children do and children will learn by copying their parents. (Example) For example if parents tell their children that God exists and can help them they will grow up to believe it.

(ii) Explain it briefly (iii) How could it help people turn to God Practice Question Explain how a religious upbringing might make people turn to God. (i) What is this? (ii) Explain it briefly (iii) How could it help people turn to God

Question model answer pt 1 Being brought up within Christian family might make people turn to God. Parents pass on their beliefs and the beliefs of their community. A person’s beliefs forms a core of that person’s identity so parents will naturally want to pass on their values to their children. A Christian family will want to preserve God for future generations.

Question 2 model answer Pt 2 Parents will introduce their children to customs and practises which the children will learn by instruction and mimicking. For instance; attendance church or Sunday School, praying regularly and Bible reading. These actions may, in the end, become second nature and the child may regard them as normal and expected. A Christian family may also discuss Christian responses to ethical dilemmas.

Question 2 Model Answer pt 3 All this may lead to a basic belief, in the child, that of course God exists and that Christianity is the right way to worship, God.

Question – other things you could write about Gain beliefs from their community. Beliefs form an important part of their identity so parents will naturally want to pass on their values to their children. A Christian family will want to preserve God for future generations – continue the faith. Parents will pass on their own habits and customs to their children – such as attending church and praying. The family may discuss their response to ethical problems like abortion or natural disasters.

Reasons for Believing in God: Upbringing:   Upbringing:    Describe features of a Christian up-bringing? How can this lead to believing in God? What problems might it raise?   Right & Wrong   Most humans try to lead a good life and do what is right and produce happiness for themselves and their families. God must exist – a) to give people guidance in leading a good life and b) to guarantee good people a place in heaven after they die. If God did not exist their struggle would have been in vain. What guidance does God give people? Is the necessity of reward a good argument for God’s existence?

Girls are better than boys, or do I mean, boys are better than girls? Not sure, you work it out!!!

Class Debate “Boys are better than Girls.” Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion, showing that you have considered another point of view. The class will be split into two sections. The boys will argue against the statement and the girls will argue in favour of the statement. Yes that makes it harder but it allows you to understand that to win an argument you need to also offer the alternative view in a balanced fashion. In the debate one person has to stand up from each side to offer an argument a person from the other side has to stand up to counter argue the point. You need to refer to the statement. Each argument offered will help your side get a point.

And there’s homework!!!!

Homework…P.E.E Explain how having a religious upbringing may turn people against God. Why is it difficult for children to be allowed to make up their own minds before they become teenagers? Do you think children should follow the same religion as their parents? What is your opinion? Why do you believe this? Why might somebody disagree with you?
