PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE

We use the present perfect simple to express an action that began in the past until now.

We use present perfect simple to express an action happened in the past but result is in the present.

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE AFFIRMATIVE FORM: Person + have / has + past participle USES: I’ve been in China. (I’ve = I have) She’s ridden a horse. (She’s = She has) modals

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE NEGATIVE FORM: Person + haven’t / hasn’t + past participle USES: I haven’t been in China. (haven’t = have not) She hasn’t ridden a horse. (hasn’t = has not) modals

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE FOR/ SINCE /YET (NON-ACTION VERBS: be, have, know, like, etc) I’ve known Maria for 10 years. They’ve had that car since 2007. She hans’t had a boyfriend yet. modal Past Participle

EXAMPLES I have lived in San Diego for 10 years. I have lived in San Diego since 2003. Meaning = I moved to San Diego 10 years ago and I still live here today. The Present Perfect connects the past and the present.

FOR: Indicates the PERIOD OF TIME. SINCE: Indicates the INITIAL time. YET: Indicates that the action IS NOT FINISHED. (Negative sentences) Pamela hasn’t seen his uncle for 8 years. (has not) Melvin has studied in this school since 2001. Melissa hasn’t taken the exam yet.

I have lived in New York for ten years. I haven’t visited my aunt since 1985.(have not) The students haven’t finished the homework yet.
