2 At the UN WSSD (World Summit on Sustainable Development) which was held in September 2002, the Government of Japan proposed the following 3 activities and they were registered as part of Japans Type-II projects: © Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Capacity Building Activities in cooperation with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) ;. Pilot Project using Satellite Data with Thailand; and. Pilot Project using Satellite Data with Indonesia. JAXAs Asia-Pacific Earth Observation Pilot Project

3 Objectives of JAXA C.B. Activities 1. Provide necessary technical know-how to RS & GIS users in the Asia-Pacific region as a contribution by the Government of Japan to the capacity building activities recognized in WSSD, UNWCDR, EO Summit, GEOSS and CEOS; 2. Use Japanese satellite data archived for more than last 25 years for sustainable development, planning and monitoring purposes in the region; 3. Develop in-house capacities of prospective users in the region by working on project-based training programs; 4. Identify future space technology needs in the region for better service of forthcoming Japanese satellite data programs.

6 14-Year History of JAXAs Capacity Building Activities in cooperation with GIC-AIT 1. For last 14 years starting from April 1995, JAXA has been entrusting a responsibility to the Geo- Informatics Center, Asian Institute of Technology (GIC-AIT) to carry out various training programs mainly focusing on RS and GIS development of the Asia-Pacific nations. 2. The contents of the training programs have sometimes changed by the needs of the times, and now we concentrate on the Mini-Projects which is a problem-solving type of training.. GIC-AIT

7 Outline of JAXAs Capacity Building Activities in cooperation with GIC-AIT 1. Number of Trainees (JFY ) : More than 1200 from 27 countries 2. Annual Budget JAXA Spends for Capacity Building Activities through AIT: Approx. $US 300, Staff of GIC-AIT: There are about 12 Asian staff under Dr.Lal Samarakoon who is also JAXAs invited scientist.

9 Newly Started Selection-System with JFY2007 Mini-Projects At the 3 rd Sentinel Asia JPTM (Joint Project Team Meeting) held in Singapore in March 2007, JAXA announced, from the JFY2007, it would start selecting 10 Mini-Projects focusing on Disaster Management through the offer for public participation due to the following 2 reasons: 1. To open the door of the Mini-Projects to all the Sentinel Asia JPT member-organizations who are interested in developing their capacities in RS/GIS mainly for disaster management. 2. To facilitate Sentinel Asia Project, which is a disaster information sharing support system, by using Mini-Projects as a means of supporting it.

10 JFY2008 Mini-Project Selection-Results 1. During April and June 2008, JAXA and GIC-AIT received 33 proposals from 62 organizations of 14 Asian countries through their websites. (Case of JFY2007: 28 proposals from 49 organizations of 13 Asian countries.) In August 2008, JAXA finally selected 11 proposals as its 2008 Mini-Projects based on technical evaluation made by GIC-AIT. 3. The first stage of the JFY2008 Mini-Projects successfully completed at GIC-AIT (3 weeks from September 22 to Oct.10.)

15 Specialized Training in Japan for Mini-Projects High Achievers & Lecturers From JFY2006, JAXA started to invite once a year highest achievers and lecturers of the Mini-Projects to Japan in order to let them have a training opportunity in their respective fields in cooperation with some specialized organizations located in Japan.

22 Water is qualified as one of the 9 public social benefit fields of GEOSS. Water is considered as the following 2 of their five tasks: (1) Understanding of water cycle and water management; and (2) Mitigation of wind and flood damages which should be urgently worked out utilizing earth observation. 27 Scenes from past System Operation Training in Bangkok in 2007 & 2008 From JFY2007, JAXA started to organize the system operation training for the Sentinel Asia Project twice a year by inviting 10 to 20 people from the member organizations of the project as its trainees.
