FOCUS AREA OBJECTIVE o Primary objective:“To maintain and restore both environmental and economic value to grasslands, while preserving their social and cultural functions globally”.

Restoring value of grasslands, how? o Grow our global understanding and identify shared views o Design transition pathways to the future o Create a global learning and innovation environment built from on the ground experiences that will inform both local and global action, especially through comparative analysis o Integrate production, environment, economic, social and cultural well being, and collective action in grassland system assessment

Tangible outputs o Global lessons related to monitoring and managing progress towards sustainable grassland systems o Identification of practices that will enable desired change o Evidence based messages about the value of grasslands for use in dialogue

Progress to date Consult and Network Collection, collation and sharing of existing data, info & experiences o Set up a WEB portal that is currently being used as an inventory of information on grassland values. We plan to expand it’s functionality and build a workspace within the portal. o Initiated a stock take of government/sector policies related to grassland management

Progress to date Consult and Network o Building networks while participating in a series of Grassland related meetings and conferences: 4th Conference SAADC in China (July 2013) European Association for Animal Production meeting held in Nantes (August 2013) "LFS innovations for local/rural development“ 22nd International Grasslands Congress in Sydney (Sept 2013) APESS workshop in Cameroon (Nov 2013)

Progress to date Analyze and Inform o Proposal for NAMA-based initiative has been drafted & with workshop planned for early 2014 o Global soil C sequestration assessment for grasslands completed (ID global hot spots) o Develop, evaluate and compare affordable MRV (measurement, reporting and verification) methods Sustainable grazing management C accounting methodology o Comparative analysis of mental models 15 grassland sites throughout the world o Develop/adopt accounting mechanisms/indictors to value grasslands

Progress to date Pilot sites Development of an inventory of global pilot sites to: o Undertake a global comparative description o Describe the different values and measures for grassland held by stakeholders. o Describe the contribution of livestock farming to sustainable development o Develop tools and processes for multi stakeholders to assess and explore impacts of multiple drivers on future grassland systems

Progress to date Pilot Sites Identify new pilot projects: o Fill in the gaps of the current configuration of pilot sites to provide diversity of approaches o Provide evidence and example of how grassland values can be restored and enhanced in practice o Test innovation and practice change
