Drainwater Heat Recovery Presentation Overview The Resource Types of Heat Exchangers Description of the GFX or Power-Pipe TM Why Use the Power-Pipe TM ? Requirements Multi-Unit Residential Installations

Drainwater Heat Recovery DHR is The MOST Overlooked Opportunity…. About $6 Billion/year is spent to heat water in Canada Most of that heat goes down the drain Drainwater Heat Recovery (DHR) can recovery at least 20% of that total heat with an average simple payback of 3 years DHR can and will help Canada meet its pending Kyoto Commitment Requirement: warm-hot water being wasted

Drainwater Heat Recovery Energy Flow – Dishwashing without DHR Assuming: Water Heating Efficiency of 70%

Drainwater Heat Recovery Energy Flow – Dishwashing with the DHR Assuming: Boiler Efficiency of 70% DHR Effectiveness of 70%

Drainwater Heat Recovery Types of Drainwater Heat Exchangers Shell and tube is used in some applications with filtration Plate & Frame and Spiral is used in some applications with filtration wide channel used for Pulp and Paper mills Power-Pipe Gravity Film Exchanger doesnt plug up; maintenance free; easily coated for harsh drainwater high heat transfer rate per surface area [W/m 2 /K] not as compact as some other units Tank type with internal exchanger inherently inefficient because of design: not counterflow and does not effectively store the available energy

Drainwater Heat Recovery Shell & Tube Commercial

Drainwater Heat Recovery Plate & Frame Commercial

Drainwater Heat Recovery Tank Type Residential & Commercial

Drainwater Heat Recovery Gravity Film Exchanger (GFX) 100% Copper: Type L Coil (ASTM B88 & B75) tightly wrapped around DWV (ASTM B306) DWV Diameters available: 2, 3, 4 & 6 Coil connections: ½, ¾, 1, 1–¼ Lengths available: 12 – 80 Modular, therefore multiple-pipe units are often used

Drainwater Heat Recovery Why use or specify the Power-Pipe? Excellent investment Proven technology Reliable water heater Maintenance free –does not plug up, virtually no fouling, no moving parts Uses standard plumbing parts –ULC approved, DWV conforms to ASTM B306 and tube conforms to ASTM B88 & B75 Reduce water heater size Recycles energy so it is great for the environment!

Drainwater Heat Recovery REI TESS Ltd. (Thermal Energy Sharing Solution) System is installed at no cost to customer Includes installation and meter costs Includes maintenance costs Heat meters used to measure thermal energy delivered from system Bill 75% of energy savings quarterly (i.e. 25% of savings are kept by customer) After term (e.g. 20 years) ownership of system is transferred to customer

Drainwater Heat Recovery University of Regina Student Residence Situation: Midway through building –Did not have capital budgeted –Wanted savings and GHG reductions TESS proposal to provide solution with no capital cost 45 Power Pipes to serve 154 showers & 312 students Worked with engineers, legal & contractors to meet installation window in Sept Metering installed in December 2003 Estimated tonnes of CO 2 saved / year

Drainwater Heat Recovery U of R – Energy Assumptions

Drainwater Heat Recovery REI TESS Savings for U of R

Drainwater Heat Recovery Metering Strategy A Heat Meter costs more than a Power-Pipe Therefore uneconomical to install on 1 to 1 ratio Selected a statistically significant sample of ** metering points out of the 45 Power-Pipes installed Delta T will be relatively constant (Shower water vs. Cold water supply) so concentration was on Water Volume Meters ** Water Volume Meters and ** Heat Meters were installed Points were selected to be representative of all stacks & situations Centralized Data Collection Point with Modem Access

Drainwater Heat Recovery Metering Strategy

Drainwater Heat Recovery Meter Locations

Drainwater Heat Recovery Pros & Cons of the GFX DHR System – Business / Operational Cons Space: a little more than standard drain pipes is required. System will have a second warming up period after an extended cooling period (such as first thing in the morning) Pros Reduces Energy Costs (supported by NRC-CCHT Energuide Rating and CBIP Program) Reliable and Excellent Return on Investment No maintenance with Gravity Fed systems (e.g. apartment buildings) Low maintenance and failsafe with Pumped systems Very Long Life (at least 50 years) Possible sale of CO2 Emission Credits Reduced Risk of running out of Hot Water as HEAT is recycled thereby increasing total hot water capacity (when standard water heaters are not operational)

Drainwater Heat Recovery Cons Extra pipe connections on cold water supply – therefore increased maintenance risk Needs to be designed into the system Takes additional space Extra pressure drop on Cold water supply (but this is minimal at 1 to 3 psi) Heat Exchanger fouling –the maximum amount is encountered in 2-3 months; after that the thin film doesnt grow –Net effect: 0.5% to 1% loss in performance Pros Elegant Solution – simply a part of the Plumbing Easy to include in standard plumbing designs ULC approved for potable water & standard DWV and Type L copper No moving parts when gravity fed Does not clog like some Heat Exchangers can – it is a Drain Pipe No maintenance of heat exchanger required Cold water pipe after the GFX will be less prone to condensation because the water temperature will be more likely to be above the dew point temperature Reduced risk of maintenance due to sweating Long Life – simple copper pipe (50 plus years) High quality Type L copper fresh water coil Double Wall Vented Heat Exchanger so no chance of cross contamination Pros & Cons of the GFX DHR System – Technical / Plumbing

Drainwater Heat Recovery Pros Reduces Energy Consumption Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduces the Temperature of Drainwater – lessens thermal impact Promotes the Customers reputation as a responsible environmental organization Cons None Pros & Cons of the GFX DHR System – Environmental

Drainwater Heat Recovery Design, Quotes and Feasibility Studies Required Information: –Company and contact name –Load (e.g. operation schedule / occupancy, flowrate, model) –Primary water heating system –Fuel costs –Project timing Helpful Information: –Soft copy of CAD drawings –Industrial: drainwater characteristics –Often site specific At no cost RenewABILITY Energy can provide budgetary quote and feasibility study plus modifications to drawings or new drawings

Drainwater Heat Recovery News

Drainwater Heat Recovery Residential FAQs & Answers Q: Will it save energy when I take a bath? A: A little bit but it is most effective with showers. Q: Where should it be installed? A: Replace a section of the main drain stack Q: How much is spent to heat water in homes and apartments? A: The national average is 25-35% of total heating Q: How much can I expect to save? A: Typically, a 3-4 person family will reduce their water heating bill by %. The range is 20-50%. Q: The Power-Pipe is so simple, how can I be sure it works? A: The National Research Council and Natural Resources Canada have jointly tested the Power-Pipe and found that it works to efficiently reduce water heating costs in homes. It is also recognized by the Energuide for Houses Program.

Drainwater Heat Recovery Technical FAQs & Answers Q: Is the tube soldered to the drainpipe? A: No. It would not comply with the codes if it were. It is a double-walled, vented heat exchanger Q: Is the GFX code compliant in Canada? A: YES - ULC heater exchanger for potable water Tube: ASTM B88 & B75 Type L DWV: ASTM B306 Q: Can I install the GFX horizontally? A: The GFX will not be efficient if installed horizontally Q: Water flows down a drainpipe very quickly, how is there a chance to pick up the heat? A: Fast flowing water works to our advantage because it flows in a thin film; that thin film of warm water readily looses its heat to the copper drainpipe Q: Where is the storage? A: There is none. That type of system requires cleanout, is less efficient, and can break down
