1 PLUMBING PLANS CHAPTER 31
Eric Glover 02/01/ Architectural Drawing

2 Objectives Identify the components of a residential plumbing plan.
Identify typical plumbing symbols and fixture found on a residential plumbing plan. Draw a residential plumbing plan using manual drafting techniques. Draw a residential plumbing plan using CADD techniques .

3 Key terms Central Vacuum System-a vacuum cleaning system that is built into the walls of a home, with inlets throughout the house to which a vacuum hose can be attached Plumbing Fixture Schedule-A schedule that specifies names of all plumbing fixtures to be used in the residence , number required, identify symbol, pipe connection sizes. Plumbing plan-shows a plan to view drawing that shows the complete plumbing system.

4 PLUMBING PLANS

5 Required information Plumbing Plan shows the location, site, type of all plumbing equipment to be used in the residence . It’s a plan view drawing that shows the complete plumbing system , including water supply lines, and waste deposal. This include waste lines, vent stacks, water supply lines, drain and plumbing fixture location, and the size and type of pipe being used. There’s residential plumbing codes require that plumbing fixtures be located to provide enough access for service.

6 The waste line network is usually designed first and then the rest of the plumbing system is planned around it. Waste line and vent stacks are larger in diameter than water supply lines Waste lines are not under pressure and depend on gravity to move the waste . The lines must be sloped slightly, usually ¼’’ per foot. The required slope should be shown on the plumbing plan.

7 WASTE LINES AND VENT STAKES

8 The floor drains are usually located in the basement, and attached to the garage.
Indicate drains with proper symbols and show the location of the pipe leading to the sewer or dry well. The water supply lines begin at the city water or main private water source. Show the main building on the plumbing plan with the proper shutoff valves, meter, and the size of the pipe. Shutoff valves should be provided for each plumbing fixture in the water systems. Each hot and cold water branch line should be sized so it will have proper water carrying capacity. The proper pipe size for given installation depends on the average amount of water use , peak loads, water pressure on the line, length of the pipe run.

9 Minimum Waste, Vent, And Supply Pipe Sizes

10 STANDARD PLUMBING SYMBOLS

11 Friction reduce the flow of the water; therefore, larger pipe should be used for long runs. Rather trying to calculate the pipe size for each plumbing fixture and branch line in the house, refer to recommend minimum pipe size. The plumbing plan should have the type of pipe to be used throughout the system there are several. Cooper pipe is a frequent choice for the water supply system. The pipe size is nominal diameter refers to the inside diameter of the pipe. There are different type of cooper pipe TYPE L-Is a medium weight used for inside hot and cold water lines. TYPE K-Is heavier than TYPE – M TYPE M-Is Lighter in used for drain, waste; and vent.

12 DIFFERERNT TYPE OF COOPER PIPES

13 In some areas, cooper pipe has been largely replaced by chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPCV)or cross-linked polyethylene(PEX). CPCV is made to match the outside diameter of corresponding cooper tube size (CTS). CPCV is available in ½’’ to 2’’ CTS. It can be used for both hot and cold water . PEX is available in ¼’’ to 3’’ CTS. PEX is pipe is flexible, it its comes both straight length and in coils

14 Use standard symbols whenever possible
Use standard symbols whenever possible. Standard symbols are recognized and accepted by drafters, designers, contractors, and trade-workers. If the symbol not standard or commonly used , explain the symbol in a legend. Legend should appear on the plan where the symbols are used to show some standard plumbing symbols .

15 Information other than that represented by symbols, dimensions are recorded in general notes on the plumbing plan. The notes are located above the title block or in another prominent place. Notes may refer to material, installation procedures, or any other facet of the plumbing system.

17 Procedures For Drawing A Plumbing Plan
Several decisions and calculations must be made before the plumbing plan can be drawn. Manufacturer catalog are good source of Information. The location of public utilities, such as the public sewer, water, storm drains, and gas, must be established. The plot plan usually provides this information. Be sure piping on the plumbing plan is include. The Central Vacuum System should be place on the Plan.

20 Review Questions? 1.) Explain the purpose of a plumbing plan? shows the location, site, type of all plumbing equipment to be used in residence . 2.)Name two features that may be found on a plumbing that are not related to the water and waste removal system, water supply system, or plumbing fixtures? Size and type of pipe you used 3.)How many plumbing plans are need for a typical residential home ? Two or more plans, one for each level 4.)Name two major consideration in planning the waste lines? Proper location And approximate size . 5.)How many stacks must a residential home have? Each toilet much have a main stacks 6.) where does the water collected in floor drains in garage and basement go? to the storm sewer .or the dry well 7.)Why are large diameter pipe needed for long runs? Friction reduce the flow of the water. 8.)List the four type of cooper pipe that are commonly in used in residential plumbing systems ?TYPE-L , TYPE-M,TYPE-M, TYPE-K 9.)What information is included on a plumbing fixture schedule ? All plumbing fixtures for residence, number required, identifying symbols , pipe connection sizes. 10.)What is main advantage of specialized CADD software for piping drafting? Inclusion of a symbol library with piping symbols, which eliminates the need to design your plan
