Lesson 2: What Is Inside a Seed By Megan Mason

Internet Resources This lesson will use a video segment from Discovery Education. The segment is called “Seeds” and is from the video “The World of Plants: Our Flowering World.” This video segment discusses the parts of a seed and shows students a dissected lima bean. It will also use a page from the Missouri Botanical Garden’s website. This webpage shows students a photograph of a dissected lima bean that is very clear and easy to see. It also has a time-lapsed video if germination.

Teacher computer connected to a TV or a projector. Your Media Specialist can help you if you are unsure how to do this. Classroom Computers Load the video segment on your computer so that it is ready to be played. Load the website onto the classroom computers. After procedure 4, introduce the video segment to students. Tell them that the video will help show them what they will be looking for when they dissect their seeds. Play the video. Next, introduce the webpage. Tell students that they will be able to view the photograph of the dissected bean after they dissect their own beans.

Before having students draw their observations, have them take a minute to look at the webpage’s photographs. Because the plant’s embryo is so small and often breaks, it is helpful for students to see a picture.
