Post-graduate programs in Toronto Over 400 trainees registered in postgraduate training in Medicine programs –The largest program in the largest faculty of medicine in the country Recognized excellence due to: –High-quality teaching –Innovation

Types of postgraduate trainees Core internal medicine residents Subspecialty residents Residents from other departments Fellows: –Clinical –Research

Contacts with postgraduate trainees Attending staff Formal rounds or academic half-days Examiner, interviewer, or judge Mentor Advocate Research supervisor Educational administrator

On being a good teacher Treating residents with respect –Adhering to PAIRO guidelines post-call, vacations, etc Showing a real interest in them Being available –At reasonable times Providing continual practical feedback Continual improving your teaching skills –Learning from feedback –Taking advantage of faculty development Being innovative –Try something new

Teachers wanted All teaching activities are recognized and appreciated We particularly need: –Mentors for residents –Tutors willing help residents in need of remediation –Examiners for practice exams –Individuals willing to innovate

Recognition Teaching effectiveness is an important criterion for promotion regardless of career path All residents are expected to complete teacher evaluation forms for all teachers they have meaningful contact with –Evaluation forms completed electronically Summaries of teaching effectiveness scores will be provided to you at least annually Awards recognize excellence in post-graduate teaching at the hospital, department and faculty level
