Warm Up Activity Find your journal on your assigned seat. Look for a grammatical or stylistic error in one of the posted essays. Copy down the sentence with the mistake in your journal. Correct the error. Then write an explanation of the correction in your journal.

Human Nature—Self-Destructive “By the Waters of Babylon” “The Great Burning” “Walimai” “They wanted the land; they wanted to carry away the wood; they were also searching for stones” (144).

Metaphorical Interpretation “By the Waters of Babylon” Post-apocalyptic New York “Walimai” Walimai kills the young Ila tribeswoman in order to save her from suffering (poison on the knife). The suffering is a result of the Conquest.

Metal is an indicator of civilization “By the Waters of Babylon” The priests go into the “Dead Places” to hunt for metal (risking radiation and contamination). “Walimai” The mining company is destroying the land and forest in order to take metal out.

First-person Narration “By the Waters of Babylon” A priest of the Hill People The north and the west and the south are good hunting ground (1). We are not ignorant like the Forest People (1). “Walimai” The names of persons and living creatures demand respect because when we speak them we touch their heart and become a part of their life (141). They hunted with powder from far away without skill or courage.
