Introduction In this Webquest students are faced with the prospect that the internet is going to be banned from their school unless they can prove to their parents that they know how to be safe on the internet. Each student has an assigned role for which they must become an expert. As a group they must create a presentation to persuade their parents to change their votes. It is up to you to determine what the outcome will be! HOME

Task Your parents are trying to ban the Internet!  It is up to you and your teammates to make sure that does not happen.  You need to prove to your parents that you understand how to be safe on the Internet and you will only have one chance to do so.  At the next PAC meeting, you and your team will present a multimedia presentation that covers Internet Safety.  To accomplish this goal you and your team will each choose a different role and gather information about different aspects of the Internet.  You must become an expert in your area so that you are able to persuade your parents to vote in favor of allowing the Internet back into the classroom.  You and your group must compile the information you find into a 10 minute presentation that focuses on Internet Safety.  You must also compile a list of the Top 10 rules for staying safe on the Internet that will be displayed in every class on campus as a reminder to "Play It Safe" on the Internet. Process Step 1 - Choosing Roles HOME Process Step 1 - Choosing Roles As a group your first task is to determine which part you will play in this assignment. Below you will find the four different personalities that will be part of this project. You might want to read over the information for each one before deciding who you want to be. Make sure you record your assigned roles on the Role sheet and turn it in to your teacher. Spammer Sally Role: You are an e-mail aholic. If you had a choice, e-mail would be your only form of communication. You love sending and receiving e-mails, no matter Netiquette Nelly Role: You are always trying to be as nice as you can be. You have learned all the rules of proper etiquette in your day to day experience. But when it comes to the Internet, you skills are a bit lacking. You seem to forget what it means to be nice. Cyberbully Bill: You always add your opinion without concern for others feelings and you always dominate a situation. Chatty Chris Role: You love to talk.  You are always getting in trouble at school for talking to your friends.  You love to stay online for hours at a time chatting with online friends that you have met.  You have never really learned the proper rules of chatting, but you do not think you need them. Surfer Steve Role: You love looking for information on the Internet.  You can spend hours looking for one small piece of information because you love to see where other links go.  You are not to knowledgeable about how to get the information you are looking for, but at least you know it is out there.

Process Step 2: Pieces of the Project To complete this project each student will need to complete the following: 1. Individual questions from your role. 2. A group member evaluation sheet for each member of your team, your self included. 3. Creating at least two slides for your multimedia project. 4. Becoming an expert in your area in order to present your findings and answer questions from the audience on your topic. 5. Present a portion of your multimedia project.   As a group each team should complete the following: 1. A Role Sheet 2. A multimedia presentation, (using Powerpoint, Appleworks Slideshow, or Movieworks) that is at least 8 slides long and follows the criteria listed on the rubric. 3. Present their project in such a way that it will persuade the audience to vote in favor of keeping the Internet in school. 4. Process Step 4: Review Resources Now that you have been assigned a role and reviewed what is expected of you, it is time to review the resources you have to complete the task. Click on the resources button to review your information. HOME

Process Step 5: Compile Information Do you think you are ready for the task? Have you reviewed all your resources? Do you know what is expected of you? Well, then it is time to begin finding out more about your area of expertise. Return to your questions and use your links to find the answers. Remember you must become an expert in your area, don't just answer your questions and move on. You will need to read up and be familiar with the information so you can present a valid argument. Netiquette Nelly Define netiquette. What is the basic rule of netiquette? What is a flame?  A flame war? How can you avoid a flame war? Name two things you should remember about being online? Why should you stay away from using all capital letters? What should you do if you become uncomfortable with a topic or site you find on the internet? What is the difference between a public and a private e-mail message? What is an emoticon? What can you use them for?  Copy down at least two and what they mean. List 5 items you think should be included on your Top 10 list of Internet Safety Tips. HOME

Cyberbully Bill Define cyberbullying. What is the difference between traditional bullying and cyberbullying? How often does cyberbullying occur? Is every cyberbullying incident the same? How does cyberbullying affect adolescents? What are the warning signs? What is the school’s role? What can parents do? List 5 items you think should be included on your Top 10 list of Internet Safety Tips. HOME

Surfer Steve Define Internet. What types of things can and should the internet be used for? What does WWW stand for?  How is it different than the internet? What is a browser?  Name two. What do you use a search engine for?  Name two that are geared towards kids. Name three benefits from joining the information super highway. What can be done to promote safe internet surfing? What type of information should be given out over the internet?  What should not? List 5 items you think should be included on your Top 10 list of Internet Safety Tips. HOME

Chatty Chris Describe an online "chat". List at least two problems that a person might encounter in a chat room. What are some of the benefits of a chat room? What are some of the downfalls or risks of a chat room? What should you do if you find something inappropriate or that makes you feel uncomfortable? What type of information can you give out in a chat room? What type of information should you never give out? Name at least two ways you can stay safe in a chat room. List 5 items you think should be included on your Top 10 list of Internet Safety Tips. HOME

Process Step 6: Create Products After you have all your questions answered discuss as a group what type of Multimedia presentation you want to create.  Remember it can be made in Powerpoint, Hyperstudio, Movieworks, or Appleworks Slideshow. Each member of the group must create at least two slides pertaining to their area of expertise.  Make sure that your presentations are uniform, same background, font, etc. As a group compile your list of the Top 10 ways to stay safe on the internet. Split into groups of two.  One group needs to create a poster showcasing your Top 10 list and the other group needs to compile your slides into one presentation. HOME

Process Step 7: Present your Argument Make sure everything is ready for your presentation.  It would be a good idea to quiz the other members of your group to make sure they can answer questions about their topic.   Fill out the group Evaluation sheets and turn them in to the teacher. Present your findings in front of the PAC committee. Make sure and showcase your Top 10 Poster. HOME

Your parents were so impressed with your knowledge of the internet that they agreed to allow it back in the classrooms.  All they asked for was that you continue to learn more about the different aspects of the internet.
