Chap 2-3 Earth is a system! System: an organized group of related objects that interact to create a whole Closed system: a system where energy, but not matter, is exchanged with the surroundings Open system: a system where both energy and matter are exchanged with the surroundings

Open or Closed?

Earth’s Energy Budget Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be exchanged. Solar radiation (from the Sun): can be reflected, absorbed, or scattered. - Only 51% of solar radiation is absorbed by Earth

Earth’s Energy Budget

Trophic Levels Trophic level: a nourishment level in a food chain. Autotroph: able to use sunlight to make food Heterotroph: animals (both carnivores and herbivores) Higher trophic levels

Trophic Levels Energy moves through trophic levels in an ecosystem and is then replenished from the sun -Matter (nutrients) also moves through trophic levels… but it is cycled back into the ecosystem, NOT replenished

Food WebFood Chain

Food Chains and Food Webs Worksheet Read the directions carefully Should be completed in 45 minutes. Will be collected today

Sphere Poster Select one of the four spheres Defend why is your sphere better than the other three! You need: 1 poster per group (four members or less) An opening argument/statement (Our sphere is the best because _________) Write 3 Evidence to back up your argument Write 3 facts about your sphere A beautiful poster with at least 4 colored pictures! Class Presentation Today (all group members must speak)
