FreightVision Austria 2050 ITS and Smart Logistics towards Eco-Efficency Claus Seibt, Independent Expert (formerly Austrian Institute of Technology)

FreightVision Austria 2050 ITS in Eco-Efficient Freight Transportation and Logistics Four Areas of ITS applications from a transport policy perspective Long and medium distance freight mobility and transport (Waterborne and Shift to rail for transport distance beyond 300 km) Long and medium distance passenger mobility and transport (European single sky and European High Speed Rail Network) Urban and urban area (urban regions) mobility and transport (CO2 Emission free inner city areas, smart urban logistics, etc.) Peripheral and shrinking region mobility and transport (demand driven, multi purpose freight transport: milk runs, etc.)

FreightVision Austria 2050 Long & Medium Distance Freight Transport and Logistic Cooperative Systems along European Green Transport Corridors  ITS as cooperative system (mode): vehicles communicating with other vehicles and transport infrastructure; European smart corridor ideas along particular routes are in the planning and demonstration phase  ITS as cooperative system (intermodal): vehicles communicating with vehicles and infrastructure and transport containers are communicating with „places of origin and destination“ (tracking and tracing)  ITS as cooperative system (integrated): vehicles communicating with vehicles and infrastructure of different modes; European green corridors, shift to rail and traffic management strategies in env. sensitive areas

FreightVision Austria 2050 Urban & Urban Area Freight Transport and Logistics Cooperative Systems in urban and urban areas  ITS for smart urban freight logistics: inner city freight traffic management, congestion and area charging, speed reduction & traffic flow management, management of loading zones, distribution and consolidation centres, etc.  ITS for smart urban freight mobility: organisation of urban and city logistics and freight transport operation: transport demand reduction by freight mobility mangement, CO2 accounting for transport operations in cities, etc.  ITS within smart city concepts: ITS systems are interlinking transport infrastructure with energy infrastructure and transport operation with energy demand management.

FreightVision Austria 2050 Past and Future Promises and Expectations in ITS  Fast and dynamic developments and innovations in the information and communication technologies (ICT) are allowing next generation ITS applications as soon as technologies are mature for the sector  However, the potential for increase of eco-efficency by ITS in the transport sector was in the past and is today still over-estimated; around 8 till 12 percent of increase may be feasible in the future  But at the end, the digitalisation of life world and production and living environments may as such transform transport demand and operation (ICT/ CIT as general diver towards eco-efficency)

FreightVision Austria 2050 Thanks a lot for your attention! 6
