OVC Council Meeting Presentation October 22, 2011 Graduate Certificate in TBI and the Adult Learner Virginia Tech Presentation by Marianne Talbot, Ph.D. National Rehabilitation & Rediscovery Foundation Virginia Tech

Admission Requirements Open to individuals interested in learning about the needs of individuals with TBI as well as strategies and techniques to assist them toward successful community reintegration. Bachelor’s degree and admission to graduate study at VT are required. Admission will be the responsibility of the ALHRD program. Students matriculating in a VT graduate program can complete the certificate as part of their degree program. Those not enrolled at VT can matriculate in the certificate program by applying as a Commonwealth Campus student.

Course Requirements u Foundations of Adult Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) u Issues in Adult Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): Policy, Research, and Professional Practice u Internship or Independent Study u Each course is 3 semester hours

Target Audience u Adult and community educators and staff u Human resource development specialists u Rehabilitation specialists and clinicians u Higher education personnel u Individuals with brain injuries and their support systems u Scholars and policy makers

Program Emphasis u Overall understanding of the brain and its dysfunction post injury u Understanding how to leverage and modify adult learning theories and practices to help address injuries sustained by learners u Changes that may be needed in the greater context of society, policy, organizational structures and the world of work, family, and other support structures

Foundations in Adult TBI Effects of TBI on underlying brain structures and function, and adjustments needed for (re)learning. Effects of TBI on family, work, and society. Role of societal agents in rehabilitation and rediscovery processes. Attention to injuries from war, sports, accidents, and other causes. u Understanding adulthood pre and post TBI u Understanding the experience from multiple perspectives u Learning adjustments in adulthood

Issues in Adult TBI u Advances in TBI practice, policy, and research u Translating theory into practice u Relevance of rehabilitative challenges and practices to theory u Raising awareness, understanding, and action in society at-large u International efforts and societal implications

Internship/Independent Study u Independent studies must be related to TBI and must follow completion of both the Foundations and Issues courses u In lieu of an independent study, an internship may be available on a selected basis where qualified on-site supervisors are available
