o Annual and progress reports, available on the OpenUp! website under components-pu. These reports illuminate the results of OpenUp! and monitor the activities and progress within the project. components-pu OpenUp! Annual Meeting 2012, Museum Nationale d‘Histoire Naturelle, Paris

o Article in International Innovation, October 2011 Project Coordinator Walter Berendsohn (BGBM Berlin) explains how the work of the OpenUp! project fits in with the existing Europeana portal and highlights how it will benefit the natural history domain and the promotion of biodiversity.

o Important achievements o Intellectual property rights (IPR) framework established to advice existing and new content providers on IPR issues. Report on “IPR problems and solutions for the domain of natural history objects” to be completed by the end of the project. o Memorandum of Understanding (available by end of project), designed for consortium partners and beyond to maintain and enrich EUROPEANA with Natural History content after the end of the project funding, to support strategic plan for the long term sustainability of the project’s infrastructure.

OpenUp! Work package 2

WP 2 - Technical Implementation What do we do? o We provide the hardware and software for seamless, stable and sustainable data flow from content providers to EUROPEANA. o We manage the OpenUp! communication Web site using a ScratchPad site. o We document the technical implementation of OpenUp! infrastructure.

Main Developments Content, content, content Connecting all partners Solving individual problems of data providers Semantic enrichment Hardening of services Bugfixing Improved configurations Revised service interfaces

WP 3 - Metadata Modelling and EUROPEANA Liaison What do we do? o We ensure the compatibility of the OpenUp! metadata provision with EUROPEANA standards. o We evaluate cooperation with the BHL project. o We do technical liaison with EUROPEANA.

WP 3 - Metadata Modelling and EUROPEANA Liaison Europeana Standard Conformance and EDM contribution – Mapping between Community and EUROPEANA data standards – Data transformation and provision – A single access point to distributed natural history multimedia content for EUROPEANA – Build upon existing networks in the Natural History domain: CETAF (Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities) GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) BioCASe (Biological Collection Access Services)

Data provision : ~ 1.5 Mio. records Images & Sounds Botany, Zoology, Mineralogy, Anthropology … 6 th largest content provider to Europeana!

Enriched OpenUp! content in Europeana OpenUp! common names enrichment

WP 4 - Zoological Community Content Provision, Metadata Catalogue and Quality Control What do we do? o We integrate institutional and departmental base for zoological natural history content provision to EUROPEANA. o We provide a model for the integration of content from the areas of palaeontology and mineralogy. o We provide multimedia objects and metadata to EUROPEANA using the OpenUp! workflow. o We provide vocabulary for zoological names. o We verify the data quality.

Data Quality Service for Zoological Names New features: Parameter for selecting one or more databases Fuzzy search extended to concept search in the Catalogue of Life (CoL) Implementation of the Fauna Europaea concept search Inclusion of Dyntaxa, PBDB, and Index Fungorum into the zoological name service of the Data Quality Toolkit

Local Data Provision Deliverables and components: Local zoological data provider software and metadata mapping functional for all content sources (list of all access point URLs, list of all connected datasources, technical information on BioCASE Provider Software). Furthermore - plan for content provision 3rd project year, 2 new providers with BPS (MNHN, GIT), regular update of coordination documents (GoogleDocs)

Data Quality Enhancement Process and Data Provision Deliverables and components: Operational content provision (overview over number and type of provided multimedia objects, stages in content provision, description of content). Furthermore - monitoring of data provision progress and data quality check (BioCASe Monitor Service, development WP4, WP7 & GBIF-D; Data Quality Toolkit, development WP2 and WP3; WP4 & WP5)

Data Quality Enhancement Process and Data Provision Number of multimedia objects per institution (zoology, mineralogy, anthropology and paleontology) available on the BioCASe Monitor Software and the number of objects which should be mobilized within the project according to the Description of Work (DoW).

Final Data Quality Checking Deliverables and components: Data quality check feedback (quality assurance at metadata and object level, questionnaire: “Quality Enhancement of Multimedia Objects and Associated Metadata in the Natural History Domain”, quality assurance in Europeana).

Data Quality Service for Paleontological and Mineralogical Objects Proof of concept for the integration model based on EFG: 3 provider applying integration model to their paleontological/ mineralogical content (UT-NHM, NM, GIT) HIT was customized successfully to harvest mineralogical content

WP 5 - Botanical Community Content Provision, Metadata Catalogue and Quality Control What do we do? o We integrate institutional and departmental base for botanical natural history content provision to EUROPEANA. o We provide multimedia objects and metadata to EUROPEANA using the OpenUp! workflow. o We provide vocabulary for botanical names. o We verify the data quality.

OpenUp! Work package 6

WP 6 - Multilingual Metadata Enrichment Including Common Names What do we do? o We transform scientific names into their multilingual common names representations. o We provide a metadata model for the integration of content from botanical and zoological common names, geographical place names and person names. o We provide a multilingual metadata enrichment service for natural history heritage objects.
