Coordination and Policy Development in Preparation for a European Open Biodiversity Knowledge Management System Supported by the European Commission through its FP7 research funding programme pro-iBiopshere

Review of WP3: Scientific content and workflow coordination Walter Berendsohn Dept. of Research and Biodiversity Informatics Pro-iBiosphere Management meeting, 15 February 2013, Leiden

WP 3 - Aims Review of methods and approaches towards creating reusable data in publication workflows – (editorial policies) – (IPR management) – (citizen science for data enhancement, use and re-use) creating reusable data from literature – (semantic tagging of content) – (linking content to external sources) and providing the results to the communities involved

WP3 – Objectives Analyze methods (data acquisition, curation and semantic integration). Review current methods for semantic mark up and their use. Facilitate crowdsourcing [random individual markup] and auth-sourcing [identified individuals recruited to do markup]. [Promote standards in annotation management] Align efforts for semantic mark up of biodiversity literature and provide technical and social solutions. Attract and get feedback from potential new users to biodiversity informatics infrastructures.

WP3 – Tasks and Deliverables Task 3.1 Data acquisition and curation Lead: Naturalis Participants: NBGB, FU-BGBM, RBGK Start/End: November 2012 / May 2013 Milestone 10: Workshop on data curation and acquisition of Floras and Faunas (February 2013) Deliverable 3.1: Best Practices Guide on Editorial Policies (May 2013) “a review and analysis of the existing methods for acquisition and curation of primary biodiversity data” [for taxonomic treatments].

WP3 – Tasks and Deliverables Task 3.2 Semantic mark-up generation, data quality, and user- participation infrastructure Lead: Plazi Participants: Naturalis, FUB-BGBM, PENSOFT, RBGK Start/End: November 2012 / August 2013 Milestone 11: Workshop on semantic mark-up generation, data quality and user-participation infrastructure (February 2013) Deliverable 3.2.1: Concept paper for involvement [in semantic markup] of individual experts, commercial vendors, and citizen scientists (May 2013) Deliverable 3.2.2: Report on the state and quality of biosystematics documents and survey reports [?] (August 2013)

WP3 – Tasks and Deliverables Task 3.3 Semantic integration of biodiversity literature Lead: MfN Participants: FUB-BGBM, PENSOFT, Plazi Start/End: September 2012 / August 2014 Deliverable 3.3.1: Report on state-of the art and research horizons of semantic integration of biodiversity literature (December 2013) Milestone 12: Workshop on mark-up of biodiversity literature (February 2014) Deliverable 3.3.2: Report on progress during the coordination process of partners and non consortium partners (April 2014) “a workplan and roadmap for the semantic integration of biodiversity literature”
