4 Charter The purpose of the Green Engineering Program Committee (GEPC) is to promote a holistic, systems approach to improved energy efficiency, sustainability, renewable energy and ‘cradle-to- cradle’ design. GEPC serves as the AIAA focal point for all “green” aerospace-related programs and technologies, and works synergistically with the appropriate technical committees to assure that the AIAA membership is adequately informed about all aspects of this critical aerospace activity.

PC Report – TAC Meeting Alexandria, Va. May 2012 Mark Melanson - PC Coordinator Peter Hartwich - Deputy Satoshi Nagano - Deputy

Three Year Review Plan (Review from last NIS Meeting) 3 year PC review process Plan  PC Group Team will assess each PC –Internal review and questionnaire/discussions  New “Baseline” created –Actions as required based upon review – Report out in May of 2012 at NIS and TAC  Proposal to change charter to allow PC Coordinator team to manage health similar to TC group directors 6

Questions for our PC Review discussions Do you have a vice chair?  If not, what are the challenges of getting one onboard  Is there a succession plan and process? Have you/your vice chair attended the TC/PC chair training held in January at ASM? How many active members does your PC have?  AIAA members?  Non-AIAA members? Is your current membership and participation level adequate for your chartered purpose and potential activity growth? Do you submit an updated roster to AIAA yearly? How often and how do you meet as a committee? 7

Questions for our PC Review discussions What would you rate as the biggest contribution this PC makes to the community as a whole? What would you rate as the biggest contribution this PC makes to AIAA as a whole? What is your biggest challenge? Is there anything specifically you think TAC leadership and your PC Coordinator team can do to help your PC? Any other questions or comments? 8

General Review Comments Each PC reviewed individually  Participants were PC and Group leadership Excellent conversations based upon content of questions  Great learning opportunity for leadership  Great opportunity to develop/discuss expectations for PC leadership Generally lasted about one hour each Well worth the time investment 9

Results Summary Process Assessment were done based upon a subjective scale  Green - Meets or Exceeds desired behavior  Yellow - Acceptable, but stronger effort could be done  Red - This is a concern item; needs work Group leaders ratings were averaged per question Questions were grouped (see next slide for details) into categories using QFD approach  Challenges  Interaction  Membership  Products  Purpose Subjective “trend” direction added 10

Summary Results 11 Max value = 9 (3 reviewers x 3 points max) Three PC Reviews are incomplete

Results Summary Like TC Groups, range of performance varies significantly  Many performing at a very high level (+)  Several undergoing rejuvenation, reinvigoration (+)  At least one ready to be disbanded (-) –Netcentric Operations Every 3 year PC Reviews were eliminated; PC Coordinator team will manage health similar to TC group directors and report status per group routine with TAC  Annual PC reports (PLEASE NOTE, STARTING 2012)  Annual Group report  Routine TAC status briefing 12

19 Conference Plan Update – Rich Wahls Organized one invited session at the JPC a summary of AAFEX I and II (Alternative Aviation Fuels Experiments hosted by NASA with multiple organizations participating in talking emissions behind a DC-8/CFM on the ground at Dryden in 2009 and 2011.) 4 invited oral presentations. For ASM 2013 in Grapevine, 4 invited sessions are in the works with presenters from multiple organizations and disciplines - 2 sessions are technical papers (12 total) on Environmentally Responsible Aviation Phase 1 results, 1 session is a summary overview of ERA phase 1 and a look towards ERA phase 2 = both 60 minute oral presentations. The 4th session is organized around progress towards N+3 and beyond technologies for transport aircraft - associated with the NASA subsonic fixed wing project. These topics overflowed the rooms in the two sessions last January. My intent is to look at the sessions created by the other TCs for ASM and identify a few more that could be co-sponsored by GEPC making a long track. I tried this for JPC 2012, but felt I got involved too late to be affective. We'll see how it goes with ASM. I'm currently planning to be involved with JPC2013, but would gladly accept someone else taking this one, and I could train/offer advice. I would like to see if other PC members would like to organize special session - most likely invited still at this point. Our best next shot for this is for JPC Let's ask for ideas either on the telecon, but definitely at our August 2012 meeting at JPC.
