Strategic Dimension 1 Future scanning activities (deep dive activities)

In this workshop you will Explore a range of resources to support “future’s thinking”.

The Horizon Report 2010 Horizon Report Johnson, Laurence F., Levine, Alan, Smith, Rachel S. and Stone, Sonja Horizon Report. Austin, TX: The New Media Consortium, 2010.

What is the Horizon Report? It identifies and describes emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, or creative inquiry on teacher education institutions within the next five years. It lists key trends in education and technology and also critical challenges facing institutions. It is produced annually.

2010 to 2015: Key Trends What is the Horizon Report? The abundance of resources and relationships made easily accessible via the Internet is increasingly challenging us to revisit our roles as teachers in sense-making, coaching, and credentialing. People expect to be able to work, learn, and study whenever and wherever they want to. The technologies we use are increasingly cloud-based, and our notions of IT support are decentralized. The work of students is increasingly seen as collaborative by nature, and there is more cross-campus collaboration between departments.

2010 to 2015: Critical challenges The role of the institution — and the way we prepare students for their future lives — is changing. New scholarly forms of authoring, publishing and researching continue to emerge but appropriate metrics for evaluating them increasingly and far too often lag behind. Digital media literacy continues its rise in importance as a key skill in every discipline and profession. Institutions increasingly focus more narrowly on key goals, as a result of shrinking budgets in the present economic climate.

What is the Horizon Report? Knowledge Works Foundation

ACTIVITY: What the future looks like? In groups of 3 spend 30 minutes looking at the Horizon Report and the 2020 forecast document in your pack: Pick out three interesting points from either document. Prepare a brief summary to share with the rest of the group to stimulate discussion and debate.
