Part II Initiation

During the “Initiation” phase, the hero learns how to live in the new world.

A. The Road of Trials The hero learns that life in the world of adventure can be difficult.

B. Meeting with the Goddess/God/Mentor A wise or magical being gives guidance or advice to the hero.

C. Woman as temptress The hero often faces temptation (many times in the form of woman). This temptress distracts the hero from his goal or tries to capture him.

(or) Temptation Though not always in female form, the hero can still face many temptations Someone or something tries to distract the hero from his goal.

(Battle with the Dragon) The hero must confront and vanquish a malevolent being. Although not part of Campbell’s monomyth cycle, the battle with the dragon represents a defeat of evil (or even inner evil) that the hero must overcome in order to be reunited/atone with the father.

D. Atonement with the Father A reconciliation—forgiveness. Atonement= At-one-ment: Being at one with the father (think of it as a “healing” or a fulfillment of something. “One must first slay the ogre of their own superego and id. So that what is left is the ego, which must in turn also be defeated, which is difficult because it requires submission and the abandonment of one's own ego to the trust of the father.”

E. Apotheosis (from Greek roots meaning “from God”) The hero recognizes his/her true identity - that spark of divinity within.

I am a Jedi, like my father before me!

No!

But you’ve always had the power to go home!

F. The Ultimate Boon The hero succeeds in his/her mission. Dorothy returns to Emerald City with the witch’s broom.
