Lesson Objectives To gain a clearer understanding why bullies bully. To help you make better choices when dealing with bullies. To help you reflect on your own actions.

Meet Kenneth He considers himself a nice guy, has some good friends and most people like him. He thought his life was pretty cool. But like all of us do, Kenneth came across some rubbish in his life that he needed to deal with…

…in fact one day Kenneth realised their was lots of rubbish in his life he needed to deal with.

Self-conscious feelings …rubbish such as…

Anger, jealousy and regret …rubbish such as…

Fear …rubbish such as…

Kenneth tried to sort his rubbish out… …but more rubbished kept appearing and he didnt know how to deal with it!

Until one day Kenneth decided on what he thought would be an easy solution…

…he thought hed dump his rubbish into his neighbours garden.

The next day Kenneths neighbour Colin went into his garden to find out he had been completely dumped on! Colin wondered what he should do? Discuss: How do you think Colin feels?

Discuss: What do you think Colin should do? Click on the options below Throw all the rubbish back over and tell Kenneth what a four-eyed purple freak he is! Clean the rubbish up and forget it ever happened Build a higher fence to try and stop the problem happening in the future Ask Kenneth why he has so much rubbish and try to help him get rid of it in a better way

You can take your rubbish back you purple freak!!! Sod-off you fat orange git!! Discuss: What do you think Colin should do? Throw all the rubbish back over and tell Kenneth what a four-eyed purple freak he is! Clean the rubbish up and forget it ever happened Build a higher fence to try and stop the problem happening in the future Ask Kenneth why he has so much rubbish and try to help him get rid of it in a better way An aggressive approach can often only cause more arguments between you and a bully and often make things worse. Return to selections.

Clean the rubbish up and forget it ever happened Build a higher fence to try and stop the problem happening in the future Ask Kenneth why he has so much rubbish and try to help him get rid of it in a better way A passive approach to bullying can mean the problem never gets solved, in fact it is likely to get worse as you will be seen as an easy target. You may now start to see the bullying as your problem that you have to deal with and start to take it out on others. Return to selections.

Isolating yourself from the bully probably means you will make compromises to your life. It could also mean the bully will have to start dumping his rubbish on someone else! Return to selections. Hey Ken. Do you realise youre dumping all your rubbish into my garden? Its making me really unhappy. Its NOT MY RUBBISH you big orange slob!!!! Would you like to borrow my brush and wheelie bin. I also have a trailer if you want to take trips to the rubbish tip? …err… really? That would be great. Thanks. The hardest option is be assertive, but bullies are bullies often because they have rubbish in their lives that they need to deal with, but cant without help and support. It may not always be your help and support, telling a teacher, parent or friend might be more appropriate. Return to selections. Discuss: What do you think Colin should do? Bullies dump rubbish on people in many forms: Being Called Names Being Teased Being hit or attacked Having your possessions taken and thrown Having rumours spread about you Being ignored and left out. Racist or sexist attacks Being pushed or pulled around Abusing people on-line or by phone.

Why do Bullies dump rubbish? They have their own problems - they may feel upset or angry or feel that they don't fit in - perhaps they have problems at home? Maybe they get bullied themselves, perhaps by someone in their own family or other adults? They're scared of getting picked on so they do it first They want to show off and seem tough because they are afraid of what people think of them Many don't like themselves and so take it out on someone else
