5 th DECLENSION GM 8

Introductory information. Paradigm. Examples of use. Vocabulary. Content

Introductory information 5 th declension together with the 4 th one represent one of three comprehensive units of noun inflection: 1 st + 2 nd declension (used also for adjectives). 3 rd declension (used also for adjectives). 4 th + 5 th declension. 5 th declension contains only words of feminine gender.

Paradigm Sg.Pl. Nom. faci- es Gen. faci- eifaci- erum Acc. faci- emfaci- es Abl. faci- efaci- ebus masculinesneutrals Beware of similar endings which can lead to confusion for example in an “give opposite grammatical number exercise”.

Comments Word dies (day) that belongs to this declension and its derivatives are usually considered to be masculine. In certain context it could be also used as feminine. In LMT we will prefer the former variant. Words like res have extremely short stem which can lead to a lapse if we try to create certain plural cases, where the ending will be actually longer than the rest of the word ( rerum, rebus ).

Use with adjectives If we connect a noun from the 5 th decl. with an adjective, the adjective will preserve its original set of endings from the 1 st or 2 nd declension: facies Hippocratica facies Hipporcatica faciei Hippocraticae faciem Hippocraticam facie Hippocratica  facies Hippocraticae facierum Hippocraticarum facies Hippocraticas faciebus Hippocraticis nounadjective
