IN: (always on left page) Copy down the following sentences and write what you think it is (observation or inference). There is no penalty for incorrect answers, do the best you can! –The apple is green. –Green apples taste good. –The basement is flooded. –The toilet overflowed.

Observation vs. Inference Starring Homer J. Simpson

Observation Observation: when studying something describe only facts that you can see, touch, smell, hear or taste. You are not making any guesses. THIS IS NOT AN OPINION!! Ohh… This liquid is green and it is leaking from a brown can. I also smell it.

Inference Inference: using your observations to make a guess or testable hypothesis about an object or an outcome THIS CAN BE A SCIENTIFIC OPINION Based on my observations, I think that this can is old and is leaking a toxic substance.

Partner Practice Write down (at least!) 4 observations and 2 inferences about the following picture.

Computer Chip Mystery In your table group, assign each person a letter, A, B, C, or D. (if you have less than 4 people, someone will need to take 2 roles) A – Organizer (in charge of the folder/contents) B – Recorder (records observations and inferences, puts group names on paper, this will be turned in) C – Speaker (shares inference with class) D – Task master (keeps group on topic)

Your task as a group: Come up with 4-6 observations each turn. Based on those observations, infer who you think stole the computer chip. You will have five minutes for each “evidence examination session.”

Clean up: Task master – put all papers back in folder and put it on the front table. Organizer – turn in paper with everyone’s name on it into the “Turn It In Basket”

OUT: Observation vs. Inference Bull’s Eye Comparison Draw a 2 topic bull’s eye in the “out” section: -Name one side of the bull’s eye “observation,” and the other side “inference.” -Differences between the two topics belong on outside sections, similarities belong in the center.

Partner Practice With a partner, make 5 observations and 2 inferences about the following picture.
