Deconstructing the Question  read the question carefully  work out exactly what the examiners are asking  ensure responses are relevant and detailed.

Answer the question  You must know the course content. HOWEVER  The difference between a band 4/5 response and a band 6 depends not on the content but on the ability to specifically answer a question.

Glossary of terms  Understand the glossary of terms.  Know what each one is asking you to do.

Analyse and evaluate  These terms are higher order terms and are critical for a Band 6 response.  Analyse means identify the different parts and look at the different relationships between them  Evaluate means- look at both the positive and negative  In answering an evaluate question, balance is important.

‘Flagging’ answers  How to ‘flag’ an answer –Flag the glossary word e.g. evaluate. –Make it easy for the marker. –Make sure you use the important words clearly at the start of your response and of each paragraph –Example: –“In evaluating the Christian response to…… – Or use synonyms “In judging……..

Synonyms for key words  So you don’t over use your key words it is good to find synonyms that you can use for successive paragraphs.  E.g. Some synonyms for evaluate are…….  E.g. Some synonyms for analyse are…….  E.g. Some synonyms for describe are…..

Quotes and examples  You need to use quotes and examples. E.g.  “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you” (Matthew 7)  “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it” (Genesis 2”  “God calls man and woman…to their responsibility for the world God has entrusted to them” CCC

Quick review so far   Answer according to the glossary term/s   Use significant aspects to illustrate your point   One idea per paragraph   Keep sentences simple   Re-read the question at the end of each paragraph
